PBS correspondent Ray Suarez: The family of Moises Rivas, a
chef at Windows on the World, famed restaurant at the top of the
World Trade Center, also waited for word…Do you know that he
went to work yesterday morning?

Woman: Yes he did. He called me from there at 9 o’clock
exactly and he told me that he loved me and that was it. And he
hung up the phone on me because it was an explosion right
there…

Suarez: So he already knew something was up?

Woman: Yes, he just said, “I’m OK – don’t worry. I love you no
matter what. I love you.” And he just hung up.

Brian Sweeney, 38, a passenger on Flight 175 that crashed into
the World Trade Center’s South Tower, left a message for his
wife, Julie, on their answering machine shortly before 9 AM.

“Hey Jules, it’s Brian, I’m on a plane and it’s hijacked and it
doesn’t look good. I just wanted to let you know that I love you
and I hope to see you again. If I don’t, please have fun in life
and live your life the best you can. Know that I love you and no
matter what, I’ll see you again.”

“To every man upon this earth
Death cometh soon or late.
And how can man die better
Than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his fathers,
And the temples of his Gods?”

–Lord Macaulay (1800-59) British historian.

“Victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory
however long and hard the road may be; for without victory there
is no survival.”

–Winston Churchill, May 1940
