Sun.

Buffalo at Jacksonville 1:00 PM

San Francisco at Philadelphia 4:30 PM

L.A. Chargers at New England 8:00 PM

Mon.

Houston at Pittsburgh 8:15 PM

The No. 1 seeds with the bye are Denver and Seattle.

–The Steelers (10-7) eked into the playoffs Sunday night, 26-24 over the Ravens (8-9).  After a 10-3 Baltimore lead at the half, Derrick Henry with 112 yards on 15 carries, both teams put points on the board in the second half, and the Ravens took a 24-20 lead on a 64-yard pass from Lamar Jackson to Zay Flowers with just 2:20 to play.

But Aaron Rodgers (31/47, 294, 1-0, 90.2) drove Pittsburgh 65 yards for a TD, the last 26 coming on a pass to Calvin Austin III, 26-24, Chris Boswell’s PAT blocked.

With 0:55 seconds to play, the Ravens drove into field goal territory, but Tyler Loop’s 44-yard attempt was badly wide right as time expired.

[Prior to the game, a priest was seen blessing an end zone with holy water – the same end zone where the upright stood that was the target of Loop’s missed field goal try.]

Henry had 14 yards on five carries in the second half.

New York Jets fans can look back on perhaps the worst overall season in franchise history, 3-14 (third-worst record, but statistically as bad as it gets).

It was the 10th consecutive season with a losing record.  Their last playoff berth was 15 years ago, the 2010 season, the worst streak among the four major professional sports.

The Jets were outscored 188-54 their last five games…503-300 for the season.

They became the first team in history to lose five straight games in a single season by 23 or more points with Sunday’s 35-8 loss to the Bills, where the Jets were outgained 470-122!

They became the first team since at least 1940 to finish the season without a single interception.

Their four takeaways were the fewest for any NFL team since at least 1940.

But the Jets are bringing back first-year coach Aaron Glenn…and I don’t disagree with this.

–The Giants are bringing back GM Joe Schoen despite the team having a 22-45-1 record his four years.  However, like in the move with Aaron Glenn, I agree with this, as the Giants are looking for a coach and there has to be some stability in the front office.

The Falcons cleaned house, firing head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot hours after winning their regular-season finale over the Saints, the team announced on Sunday.

[No stability going forward like in the case of the Giants.]

–The Browns fired head coach Ken Stefanski after six seasons.  The team announced  Andrew Berry will remain as the team’s GM.

Stefanski, who will get a new job this offseason, was named NFL Coach of the Year in 2020 and 2023, the Browns’ last two playoff seasons.

–With the Giants’ win Sunday, the Jets now land the second pick in the NFL Draft and should Oregon’s Dante Moore choose to declare, the Jets could take him, after the Raiders most certainly select Fernando Mendoza at No. 1.

Las Vegas then fired Pete Carroll after a 3-14 initial campaign.

Arizona fired Jonathan Gannon, 15-36 in his three seasons, including 3-14 this season.

College Football

Texas Tech signed the No 1 quarterback target in the portal, Brendan Sorsby.  Sorsby had 36 total touchdowns and 3,380 total yards for Cincinnati in 2025.  He is the dual threat QB the Red Raiders wanted to replace senior Behren Morton.

Former TCU quarterback Josh Hoover is heading to No. 1 Indiana to replace Heisman winner Mendoza.  And solid receiver Nick Marsh (100 receptions for 1,311 yards) in his two seasons at Michigan State is also headed to IU.

–As we prepare for Oregon-Indiana and Ole Miss-Miami in the CFP semifinals, Thursday and Friday, the Big Ten conference is 9-4 in bowl games, the ACC (8-4) and the Big 12 (4-4).  The SEC was 2-7 against teams from other conferences, 4-9 overall.

Montana State won its first FCS championship since 1984 last night, 35-34 over Illinois State in overtime, as the Bobcats blocked two kicks late, including in OT.

NBA

–The Knicks (23-13) lost their fourth straight Monday, this time embarrassed by first-place Detroit (27-9) on the road, 121-90. What a stunning turnaround as owner James Dolan said he’ll only be satisfied with an NBA Finals result this season.

ABA Quiz: The final season for the league before it merged with the NBA was 1975-76.  How many of the nine teams from that year can you name?  Answer below.

College Football

The College Football Playoff semifinals are set….

Thurs. 10 Miami vs. 6 Ole Miss in the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Ariz.

Fri.  1 Indiana vs. 5 Oregon in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, Ga.

The Big Ten is thus guaranteed a third consecutive trip to the national championship game.

Going back to New Year’s Eve, 10 Miami upset 2 Ohio State 24-14, as Keionte Scott had a 72-yard pick-six of Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin (who threw two INTs overall) to make it 14-0.

Ohio State cut it to 17-14 early in the fourth quarter, but then Miami marched 70 yards for the decisive score with 0:55 to play, CharMar Brown taking it in from five yards.

Miami’s super freshman receiver/kick returner Malachi Toney didn’t do much offensively, but he threw two key blocks in the final drive.

Carson Beck was a cool 19/26, 138, 1-0 for the Hurricanes, and Mark Fletcher Jr. rushed for 90 yards and had a touchdown receiving.

Ohio State coach Ryan Day took over the playcalling for this game and didn’t get it done.

Go ACC!

No. 1 Indiana destroyed 9 Alabama 38-3, as quarterback Fernando Mendoza had a Heisman performance, 14 of 16, 192 yards and three touchdowns, including a gorgeous 21-yard TD pass to receiver Charlie Becker (who must have NFL scouts salivating over his own talent).

Mendoza has officially stamped himself as the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, assuming it’s not the Giants (currently No. 2) who already have a franchise QB.

5 Oregon shut out 4 Texas Tech 23-0, as it was all about the Oregon defense holding the Red Raiders to just 215 yards for the game (after averaging 480 yards per game coming in, fifth in the nation), while turning over Texas Tech four times, quarterback Behren Morton throwing two interceptions and coughing up a fumble.  The Red Raiders were also second nationally in points per game (42.5) and then they were totally shut down.

For Oregon, freshman Brandon Finney Jr. picked off Morton’s two INTs and also recovered a fumble.  I’d call that a pretty good performance in the clutch.

The Red Raiders had a shot early in the fourth, down 13-0 but deep in Oregon territory, when Morton through an atrocious interception.  And then they had 4th-and-two but had a pathetic offsides penalty in another drive.

In the nightcap New Year’s Day, 6 Ole Miss, having lost earlier in the season to 3 Georgia 43-35, got its sweet revenge with a wild 39-34 win over the Bulldogs, as new coach Pete Golding is quickly becoming a legend in Oxford.

Ole Miss had a 6-0 lead after the first quarter on two field goals from Lucas Carneiro from 55 and 56 yards, but Georgia came back to score three touchdowns in the second quarter, two on runs from quarterback Gunner Stockton, the other on a 47-yard fumble recovery and it was 21-12, Georgia, at the half.

The Bulldogs were still up 24-19 after the third quarter and then Ole Miss put up 20 points in the fourth, as QB Trinidad Chambliss made some terrific plays, Chambliss 30/46, 362, 2-0, with Harrison Wallace III catching nine for 156 yards and a score, and De’zhaun Stribling seven for 122.

But as CBSSports.com’s David Cobb described it: “Chambliss produced a three-play sequence for the Ole Miss history books to begin the fourth quarter. With the Rebels trailing 24-19, the Division II transfer turned into a magician.  His first act was to evade a huge loss with a no-look shovel pass to Kewan Lacy.

“Next came a Houdini act on a third-and-7 play in Ole Miss territory.  He retreated, changed directions, evaded defenders and found Lacy for a 7-yard gain.  Chambliss promptly followed up with another circus play that resulted in a 44-yard downfield strike to Harrison Wallace III.  Lacy finished the drive with his second rushing touchdown of the game, and the Rebels converted a 2-point play to go ahead 27-24.”

Meanwhile, Lane Kiffin was excoriated anew on social media after abandoning Ole Miss for LSU’s riches.  But he will still receive at least a $500,000 bonus because of the incentive clauses built into his previous contract with the school.  Should the Rebels defeat Miami in the semis that will rise to $750,000 and $1 million if Ole Miss wins it all.

[Indiana coach Curt Cignetti netted a $700,000 bonus with the win over Bama, and if IU defeats Oregon, that rises to $1 million, and then $2 million if Indiana wins it all.]

In other bowl games of note, 18 Michigan (9-4) fell to 13 Texas (10-3) as Arch Manning had a terrific game…21/34, 221, 2-0 passing, and nine carries for 155 yards and two TDs on runs of 23 and 60 yards.  For the Wolverines, Bryce Underwood threw three interceptions.

23 Iowa (9-4) beat 14 Vanderbilt (10-3) 34-27, despite Diego Pavia’s 347 yards passing and two touchdowns for the Commodores.

Duke (9-5) finished the season on a good note, 42-39 over Arizona State (8-5) in the Sun Bowl as sophomore quarterback Darian Mensah threw four touchdown passes, and freshman running back Nate Sheppard had 170 yards on 22 carries plus a score.   Another sophomore, receiver Que’sean Brown, had 10 receptions for 178 yards and two touchdowns.  A good foundation for next year with these three, assuming they all stay.

Jan. 2ndWake Forest and first-year coach Jake Dickert completed a highly successful 9-4 campaign, 43-29 over Mississippi State (5-8) in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

SMU (9-4) gave the ACC another win, 24-17 over 17 Arizona (9-4) in the Holiday Bowl.

And Navy finishes 11-2, 35-13 over Cincinnati (7-6) in the Liberty Bowl.

Oklahoma State, looking for a big rebuild under new coach Eric Morris, formerly of North Texas, saw coach Morris convince his star North Texas QB Drew Mestemaker to come to Stillwater with him, Mestemaker reportedly inking a “two-year deal” worth $7 million for his commitment.

NFL

–Saturday afternoon in rainy, miserable Tampa, the Bucs (8-9) defeated the Panthers (8-9) 16-14, Tampa Bay holding Carolina to 19 yards rushing.

The win meant the Bucs were in line to win the NFC South, pathetically.

But today we had two resurgent teams squaring off in the division.  The Saints (6-10), winners of four straight, playing the Falcons (7-9), winners of three straight.  If Atlanta won, the Panthers would be in the playoffs.  If the Saints win, it’s the Bucs.

Saturday night, the Seahawks (14-3) clinched the No. 1 seed in the NFC with a dominating 13-3 win over the 49ers (12-5), Seattle outgaining San Francisco 361-173, beating up Niners QB Brock Purdy in the process.

–So Sunday, the Falcons beat the Saints 19-17…and it’s Carolina in the playoffs.  The Bucs played poorly the second half of the season and paid the price.

–The Jaguars (13-4) wrapped up the AFC South with a 41-7 win over the Titans (3-14), Trevor Lawrence with three touchdown passes.  He’s been playing great during this 8-game winning streak.

[The Texans (12-5) beat the Colts (8-9) on a late field goal, 32-30, the most points the Houston ‘D’ gave up all season, but they’ve won nine in a row. However, make the final score 38-30, as on the desperation final lateral play by Indy, the Texans took a muff into the end zone for a score!  I literally typed up the ending with 0:12 to play thinking this has to be over, watching it Live.]

–The Giants finished 4-13 and fell a few slots in the draft, much to the chagrin of some fans no doubt, but the future is QB Jaxson Dart, and he was solid, 22/32, 231, 2-0, 110.3 as New York beat Dallas (7-9-1) 34-17.

–In the Browns’ (5-12) 20-18 win over the Bengals (6-11), Cleveland’s Myles Garrett finally got the sack he needed to break the ‘official’ single-season sack record, 23, a ½-sack more than Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt, though Garrett played one more game.

Al Baker (Detroit, 1978) had an ‘unofficial’ 23 as well.

College Basketball

We didn’t have a lot of important Top 25 games until Friday, but going back to Wednesday, being the editor of this site and all and getting to talk about my favorite teams, Wake Forest opened up its ACC season at North Carolina State (10-4), and the Deacs (9-5) were horrendous, falling 70-57, 8 of 31 from three, 20 of 59 (34%) from the field overall, 16 turnovers, and our point guard, Nate Calmese, could not have been worse.

So then Saturday, at home against a Virginia Tech team that beat 21 Virginia in its ACC opener, Wake eked out a terrific 81-78 win as the same Calmese was superb and the reason why we won, 25 points, 7 assists, including the decisive 3-pointer with 6.5 seconds left in the game…the Deacs 10-5, 1-1; Va Tech 12-3, 1-1.  A huge win for everyone’s confidence, including Coach Steve Forbes, who lost his mother on Dec. 26, which clearly impacted the team at NC State.

Back to Friday, 2 Michigan (13-0) blasted 24 USC (12-2) 96-66.  As us Wake Forest fans keep reminding the Selection Committee, we lost to Michigan by a single point earlier.

13 Nebraska stayed undefeated at 14-0, 58-56 over 9 Michigan State (12-2). Go Cornhuskers…good story.

Then Saturday, 10 BYU (13-1) beat Kansas State (9-5) on the road in their Big 12 openers, as AJ Dybantsa had 24 points, but 7 turnovers, while Koba Keita had 16 rebounds.  Watching Keita, I mused, ‘This is exactly what Wake needs.’  Just a big dude who cleans the glass.

In a game I wish I had bet on, because I would have gone with SMU, the Mustangs (12-2) beat 12 North Carolina (13-2) 97-83, as former Wake Forest point guard Boopie Miller had 27 points on 10 of 13 shooting from the field, and 12 assists.

Miller left Wake two seasons ago, disgruntled with his lack of playing time late in games.

I liked him…but Coach Forbes didn’t think Boopie played great defense, and he didn’t like to play him as much in crunch time…and it was all understandable.  It wasn’t about money, I just think Forbes made what was, at the time, a rare portal mistake; Forbes having been the master of the portal in his first few years in Winston-Salem.  [This year he missed mightily with Schweiger and Mekhi Mason.]

So Boopie fled the program.  Miller came into Saturday’s contest with North Carolina averaging 21 points and 7 assists, and the kid then worked his magic against the Tar Heels.

Duke (13-1) had a tough win at Florida State (7-8) 91-87, as Isaiah Evans had 28 on 6 of 14 shooting from beyond the arc, his specialty.  Cam Boozer added 17 points and 9 assists.

Robert McCray V, another Wake Forest discard, had 22 for the Seminoles.

Unranked UCF (12-1) beat 17 Kansas (10-4) 81-75.  I keep forgetting UCF is in the Big 12. Nice win for the Knights.

St. John’s (9-5, 2-1) is off to a very disappointing start, falling to Providence (8-6, 1-2) 77-71 Saturday afternoon at the Garden.  The Red Storm’s Zuby Ejiofar had 33 points and 15 rebounds, but the rest of the team shot 12-for-55 from the field!  Not what Coach Rick Pitino and St. John’s fans expected from the squad.

NBA

–The Knicks have had a lousy week, barely beating the Pelicans in New Orleans, then blowing a 92-83 lead Wednesday against the Spurs, falling 134-132, having entered the night 19-0 when leading after three quarters, and on Friday, without Karl-Anthony Towns and Mitchell Robinson, the Knicks (23-11) were a no-show against the Hawks (17-19) at the Garden, 111-99.

And then on Saturday, the Knicks made it three straight losses, falling to the 76ers (19-14) 130-119.  KAT and Robinson returned, but the exciting Philly backcourt duo of Tyrese Maxey (36 points) and VJ Edgecombe (26) was too much for New York, which it is readily apparent is really missing sparkplug Josh Hart, whose been out with a sprained ankle.

But back to the Spurs game, Victor Wembanyama had 31 points and 13 rebounds in just 24 minutes before going out with a hyperextended knee, but an MRI the next day revealed no damage and Wemby pronounced himself fine to play, though the Spurs kept him out of Friday’s win over the Pacers and said he’s day-to-day.  [Wemby was also held out of Saturday’s loss to Portland.]

–The Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard remains on fire.  After 55 last Sunday against the Pistons, Leonard had 33 in a win over Sacramento Tuesday and then 45 Thursday against Utah in another win.

The Clippers (12-21) had actually won six in a row, owing in no small part to Kawhi’s return to superstar form.

But then L.A. ran into the Celtics (22-12) on Saturday, Jaylen Brown with a career-high 50 points on 18 of 26 shooting, Boston running away with it 146-115.  Kawhi had just 22 in defeat.

The Celtics, playing shockingly well without Jayson Tatum, are now just a ½-game behind the Knicks for second in the Eastern Conference.

LeBron James turned 41 on Tuesday, scoring 17 on his birthday as the Pistons whipped L.A. 128-106.

–Oklahoma City superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was named Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year…a good pick.

Golf

The PGA Tour would normally be starting the season this coming week in Kapalua for the Tournament of Champions, but since it was cancelled due to the drought and poor course conditions there, the season gets going Jan. 15-18 at the Sony Open at Waialae, Honolulu.

But all the talk these days is about LIV and Brooks Koepka’s departure and what the PGA Tour would do with Koepka, and perhaps Bryson DeChambeau, and others who may opt to leave LIV Golf as well, if not this year, maybe 2027.

Rory McIlroy weighed in the other day.

“I think they’ve [LIV players] already paid their consequence.  They’ve made the money but they’ve paid their consequence in terms of the reputation and some of the things they’ve lost by going over there,” McIlroy said.  “If it made the overall tour stronger to have Bryson DeChambeau back and whoever else, I would be okay with it.  But it’s not just me, and I recognize that not everyone is in my position.  It would be up to the collective group of PGA Tour members to make that decision.”

“Maybe it’s just that I’m too much of a traditionalist to get it, but it just doesn’t seem to have anything,” Rory continued.  “They were coming into the game saying, ‘We’re going to be different, we’re going to be this, we’re going to be that,’ and it’s not…Even the fact they’ve now switched from 54 holes to 72 holes to get OWGR points, so it’s like you’re just doing what everyone else is doing.  So what’s different, apart from the money?”

In the past, McIlroy talked about “consequences” for their action and that the LIV Golf pros should not be allowed to just waltz back into a PGA Tour locker room without some sort of recompense.

“The people who left the PGA Tour irreparably harmed this tour, started litigation against it. We can’t just welcome them back in.  That’s not going to happen,” Rory said back in 2023.

DeChambeau’s contract expires at the end of 2026, and McIlroy knows that if the PGA Tour rolls out the red carpet for Bryson and woos back one of golf’s biggest stars, that it may be the final tee in LIV’s coffin.

Premier League

–The intense holiday schedule wrapped up this weekend, but Thursday, New Year’s Day, do you think some players might have been hung over…or just tired from staying out too late?

How else do you explain that Liverpool-Leeds, Brentford-Tottenham, and Sunderland-Manchester City all ended up 0-0!  Yikes…and people paid good money for this.

Saturday, Aston Villa continued its sterling form, 3-1 over Nottingham, and Arsenal defeated Bournemouth 3-2.

Sunday, Fulham tied Liverpool 2-2; Tottenham and Sunderland played to a 1-1 draw; and Chelsea, in its first game since parting ways with manager Enzo Maresca, got a tying goal in stoppage time for a 1-1 draw with Man City.

Table…20 of 38 played…points….

  1. Arsenal 48
    2. Man City 42
    3. Aston Villa 42
    4. Liverpool 34
    5. Chelsea 31
    6. Man U 31

Last place (No. 20) Wolverhampton actually won its first game of the season, Thursday, 3-0 over West Ham, which itself is facing relegation.

MLB

Baseball’s free agent market should be heating up again shortly.  The top Japanese pitcher came off the market as Tatsuya Imai agreed to a reported three-year, $63 million contract with the Astros.

Imai, 27, is the third high-profile Japanese starter to come to MLB in as many years, joining Yoshinobu Yamamoto (2023 offseason) and Roki Sasaki (2024).

Unlike that pair, who both signed with the Dodgers, Imai wanted to forge his own path.

Imai had a 45-day window to sign with teams that would have expired Jan. 2.

–The Blue Jays have been aggressive in the offseason, adding pitchers Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce and Tyler Rogers in free agency.  And they are also signing solid Japanese third baseman Kazuma Okamoto to a reported four-year, $60 million deal.

Okamoto hit .327 with 15 home runs for the Yomiuri Giants of the Japan Central League last season, battling injuries, but the 29-year-old eclipsed the 30-homer mark in each season from 2018-2023, and clubbed 27 in 2024.

–The Angels officially cut ties with Anthony Rendon, restructuring his contract and ending his time with the team after six seasons.

Rendon’s $38 million salary for 2026 will be deferred for three to five years, though the exact timetable remains unclear.

Rendon, 35, signed what would prove to be one of the worst contracts in baseball history, seven years, $245 million following the 2019 season, after he led the National League in RBIs with 126 and had a 1.010 OPS for Washington.

But after a solid Covid-shortened 2020, it was all downhill and he never appeared in more than 58 games, 2021-2024, while dealing with a laundry list of injuries, including to his groin, wrist, hamstrings, leg and oblique. He then sat out all last season.

Stuff

–The FIS World Cup Alpine circuit had the women skiing this week at Kranjska Gora in Slovenia, and Saturday, American Paula Moltzan picked up third in the giant slalom, her second podium finish in the event this season.

Then today, Mikaela Shiffin failed to win in the slalom for the first time in six races this season, finishing second to Switzerland’s Camille Rast, who also won the giant slalom the day before.

–Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews, who will be a key figure for Team USA at the Olympics, became Toronto’s all-time leading goal scorer in a 4-3 loss to the Islanders Saturday.

Matthews, 28, has 421 career goals and 339 assists for 760 points in just 664 games.

A woman was killed in a suspected mountain lion attack while she was hiking alone in the mountains of northern Colorado on Thursday, in what would be the first fatal attack by one of the predators in the state in more than 25 years, authorities said.

Wildlife officers later in the day located two mountain lions in the area and fatally shot the animals, said a spokesman for Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

The attack occurred in the mountains south of the small community of Glen Haven, about 7 miles northeast of Estes Park and considered the gateway to the eastern entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park.

Shortly before noon, two hikers encountered a mountain lion near the woman’s body along a remote section of the Crosier Mountain trail, which is on a national forest.

The hikers threw rocks at the animal to scare it from the immediate area so they could try to help the woman.  One of the hikers was a physician who attended to the victim and did not find a pulse, officials said.

Sightings of mountain lions are common in the area, but there have not been any recent documented attacks on humans.

Colorado’s last suspected fatal attack was in 1999, when a 3-year-old was killed.  Two years before that, a 10-year-old boy was killed by a lion and dragged away while hiking with family members in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Last year in Northern California two brothers were stalked and then attacked by a lion that they tried to fight off.  One of the brothers was killed.

The animals, also known as cougars, can weigh 130 pounds and grow to more than six feet.  They primarily eat deer.

But this fact surprised me.  Colorado has an estimated 3,800-4,400 of the animals, which are classified as a big game species in the state and can be hunted.
