Tale of the Tape at the gas pump, nationwide averages, courtesy of AAA.
Fri. Feb. 27…regular gas $2.98…diesel $3.75
Wed. Apr. 22…reg. $4.02…diesel $5.48
But understand gasoline futures were up 37 cents in three days at the peak today ($3.37), before finishing at around $3.34 as I go to post…and this rise isn’t reflected in the above $4.02…yes, there is a lag between the action in the futures market and what you see at the pump.
And literally right after I posted yesterday, President Trump posted on Truth Social at 4:09 PM:
“Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so and, upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal. I have therefore directed our Military to continue the Blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and able, and will therefore extend the Ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other. President DONALD J. TRUMP”
And then at 8:36 PM, Tuesday, Trump wrote:
“Iran doesn’t want the Strait of Hormuz closed, they want it open so they can make $500 Million Dollars a day (which is, therefore, what they are losing if it is closed!). They only say they want it closed because I have it totally BLOCKADED (CLOSED!), so they merely want to ‘save face.’ People approached me four days ago, saying, ‘Sir, Iran wants to open up the Strait, immediately.’ But if we do that, there can never be a Deal with Iran, unless we blow up the rest of their Country, their leaders included!”
It was a total 180 from what the president had said earlier in the day, befitting his day-to-day ever-changing pronouncements on the war, and talks remained in limbo.
Oil surged to $93 on West Texas Intermediate and Brent over $101, after Iran then renewed attacks on shipping, firing on three vessels, seizing two of them, in a new escalation.
Iran has said it will not reopen the Strait while U.S. naval interceptions continue. The ongoing disruption is contributing to severe supply concerns, with estimates of demand destruction nearing 4 to 5 million barrels per day, or about 5 percent of global supply, with Asia most affected.
We have Tesla earnings after the bell.

The Mets lost their 12th straight Tuesday night at Citi Field, 5-3…closer Devin Williams blowing it a second straight game in the ninth.
The Mets have been outscored 67-22 during the streak, and as noted before, no team with a 12-game losing streak has gone on to the postseason.
Understand, that Mets fans who watch every game the entire season, whether we are good or bad, have just one hope when the season starts…meaningful games in September.
This season is already over April 22nd.
For European football fans, just 10 years after Leicester City was crowned Premier League champions, in the biggest surprise in global team sports, ever, the Foxes have been relegated a second consecutive season, from the EFL Championship League to League One.
A scary thought for us Tottenham fans, who face Premier League relegation this season. You don’t automatically come right back from the Championship League, which is where the Spurs could be headed.
