NCAA Wants to Ban Gambling On Games

According to the AP, the NCAA is taking its case to Congress,

hoping for a nationwide law banning gambling on college sports.

“I think this is a very troublesome issue for us,” Sen. Richard

Bryan of Nevada said on Wednesday. “If the NCAA rallies the

college presidents, alumni associations and other academic

groups, I think this could be a very difficult issue for us to deal

with.”

Casino interests contributed almost $6 million to federal

campaigns last year. Nevada”s 138 legal sports books took in

$2.3 billion in sports wagers in fiscal 1999, earning nearly $99

million, according to the state Gaming Control Board. It is

estimated that 40% of the betting is on college sports.

Sen. Bryan said Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., promised to

introduce the NCAA bill. A federal law passed seven years ago

prohibits betting on amateur and professional sports, but Nevada

was exempted along with Oregon, Montana and Delaware, who

currently don”t allow it under their own laws.

Dolly Parton

For obvious reasons I couldn”t include her in my above “stocking

stuffer” question, if you catch my drift. In the 11/21 Sunday

Times Magazine, Dolly was asked why she dressed the way she

did (not that there is anything wrong with that).

“I patterned myself after this woman that was the town tramp

back home. She had blond hair and high heels and red fingernails

and lips, and to me she was like what movie stars were to other

kids. We”d see her, and I”d say, ”Oh, look, she”s got plastic

goldfish in her heels!” and my mama would say, ”She ain”t

nothin” but trash, nothin” but trash,” and I thought, ”Ooh, that”s

what I”m gonna be when I grow up – trash!”” You go, Girl!!

Renaissance Treasure Found in Pa.

In another recent story from the AP, a painting that hung almost

unnoticed for nearly 70 years in a dark corridor of a Jesuit center

has been authenticated as a rare and valuable work by Tintoretto,

a 16th century Venetian artist (and one of my personal favorites as

I stare at a print…or maybe it”s real!)

The painting, “The Raising of Lazarus,” is estimated to be worth

as much as $2 million. The Jesuits thought it was a reproduction

and the couple who donated it paid $35,000 for the work in 1928.

Said one art curator, “This is a world-class painting that could

easily be part of the collection of the Louvre.” It was this

curator, Dr. Robert Metzger, who convinced the Jesuits to let art

experts authenticate it. The work, painted around 1556, shows

Christ raising Lazarus from his death bed.

So, check all of your paintings, immediately. I only ask for a 10%

cut if you have some treasures lying around.
