NFL Quiz: Who is the all-time leader in punting average?

(minimum 250 punts) Answer below.

America”s Most Beautiful Babe of the Century

Is this sexist? Maybe some of you think so. But with all of the

other lists out there, I certainly am within my rights to select a

woman for this category. And the winner is…Peggy Fleming.

In the humble opinion of this editor, no one personifies what it

takes to be a beautiful babe more than her. Incredible beauty,

intelligence, courage and class. Tack on the fact that she was a

great champion in a very public arena and you have perfection.

Peggy has also fought back from some difficult medical problems.

So Ms. Fleming, God bless you and may you continue to be a

shining example to women everywhere for decades to come.

The International Babe of the Century is none other than Sophia

Loren. You”re nuts if you think there is anyone else.

Sports Bits

–You have to be a track and field fanatic to appreciate this but

some of you may remember the name of Vladimir Yashchenko.

He was a Soviet high jumper who set the world records, indoor

and outdoor, in 1978. So, as a Russian, it shouldn”t surprise too

many folks that Yashchenko died last week, at the age of 40,

from cirrhosis of the liver.

–On Saturday, Tanya Streeter, 26, and of the Grand Cayman”s,

established a free immersion dive world record of 180 feet in

Ocala, FL., surpassing the mark of 170 feet. Streeter remained

under water for two minutes, 48 seconds. Now I know what

some of you want to do…see if you can hold your breath for

even a minute. Please don”t try this without someone watching

you. I take no responsibility whatsoever.

Beach Boys.Bummer

These guys are probably my favorite group of all time, along with

The Zombies and The Dave Clark Five. Anyway, I saw them do

one of “The Today Show” Friday spots this summer and I was

distressed to see that only Mike Love and Bruce Johnston were

fronting the band. Where”s Al Jardine, I thought? Well, if you

didn”t know, it seems that the Boys are battling over the use of

the band”s name. Mike Love has been licensed by Brother

Records, the band”s corporation that holds the trademark to the

name, to perform under the Beach Boys moniker. Guitarist

Jardine, who”s been touring as the “Beach Boys Family and

Friends,” has not. And now the corporation is suing Jardine in

Los Angeles.

It seems that Jardine is not complying with strict standards

designed to maintain the Beach Boys image – “i.e., cars, surf, girls

and fun,” court papers say. The Beach Boys are known for their

four-part male harmonies, say the papers, but Jardine”s band has

three female lead singers. Geezuz, guys. Grow up!!

Brian Trumbore”s top 3 Beach Boys songs: “All Summer Long,”

“When I Grow Up (To Be A Man),” “Sail On Sailor.” “God

Only Knows” is in a totally separate category. That belongs right

up there with “The 1812 Overture” and Richard Strauss”

“Rosenkavalier.”

Retiree Blows Pension on One-Night Stand

Thanks to my friend Johnny Mac for passing along this Reuters

story out of Nairobi:

“A sugar company employee who took early retirement lost his

$3,600 pension in a one-night orgy of beer, women and song,

Kenyan newspapers reported Thursday (12/2).

“The man, who was unnamed, cashed his 270,000 shilling pension

check as soon as he stopped work and headed for a bar.

“”Feeling thoroughly liquid and hence unstoppable, he set to

conquer a woman from a neighboring country,” the Kenya Times

said. ”The retiree, together with his newfound lover…proceeded

to drown other revelers in free beers for hours on end.””

“When the bars ran out of beer the couple staggered to a hotel. ”I

shall now go for the real thing since the hours seem to be running

away,” the pensioner declared. When he woke, the woman and

the last of his pension were gone. She was last seen boarding an

early-morning long-distance bus.” [The moral to this story? Be a

long-term investor and put your pension in a good growth fund]

Top 3 songs for the week of 12/8/62: #1 “Big Girls Don”t Cry”

(The 4 Seasons) #2 “Return To Sender” (Elvis Presley)

#3 “Bobby”s Girl” (Marcie Blane).
