NFL Quiz: Who was the last passer to throw for 400 yards in

consecutive games? [Hint: 1980”s] Answer below.

“Peanuts” Christmas Quiz: In “A Charlie Brown Christmas,”

what is Lucy”s big request for Santa? Answer below.

Christmas time…is here…

.Happiness….and cheer…

Charlie Brown: I think there must be something wrong with me

Linus. Christmas is coming but I”m not happy. I don”t feel the

way I”m supposed to feel.

Linus: Charlie Brown, you”re the only person I know who can

take a wonderful season like Christmas and turn it into a problem.

I can relate to Charlie Brown this year as I feel a little stressed

out. Some of you may be like me. Each year I vow to really

enjoy the Christmas season and each year I get too tied up with

other stuff. But then I do get the spirit when I go to church and,

after all, that”s what it”s all about, right?

And how the heck can I begin to complain when I read of

someone like Roger Neilson? Neilson is the coach of the

Philadelphia Flyers. When he was the Rangers coach he received

a lot of heat for their poor performance at times but no one ever

said a bad word about him personally. Well, just about ten days

ago Neilson announced to his team that he had an incurable form

of bone marrow cancer.

But talk about character, when he broke the news to his stunned

players, he started with a video of the previous night”s game and

edited in part of a Monty Python movie. According to

sportswriter Rich Chere, after Flyers defenseman Chris Therien

loses his stick and gloves in a fight, the tape turns into a Monty

Python knight who wants to keep fighting after losing his legs and

arms. Just something to break the tension.

Said Neilsen, “It”s been such an emotional time for me. You get

on the phone and people are crying. I seem to end up being the

one who”s trying to comfort them. Everyone is feeling sorry for

you.” Roger, you”re an inspiration. [He”s going to keep

coaching through the treatment].

According to Sports Illustrated”s Steve Rushin, here are a few of

the year”s top comments.

Mary Bryan, ESPN golf announcer, on air during the Rochester

International, blurted out: “I think players and caddies have to

have good intercourse on a week like this.”

Best Answer to Dumb Question: Injury-plagued tennis player

Todd Martin was asked in a U.S. Open press conference: “Could

you tell us where you are physically right now?” “Physically, I”m

right here,” replied Martin. “Would you like to know where I am

metaphysically?”

To the winners, Rushin hands out the Theismann trophy, named

for quarterback-turned broadcaster Joe Theismann, who once

said, “The word ”genius” isn”t applicable in football. A genius is a

guy like Norman Einstein.”

Bill Gates

Well, from time to time it”s important to remember just how

wealthy Gates is. According to a recent Bloomberg report, Gates

net worth is still around $90 billion, even after giving away $17-

20 billion through his foundation. Which means that Gates is still

worth more than the GDP of Ireland ($81 billion). And he”s

worth more than the total value of McDonald”s or Ford. In fact,

if Microsoft stock did nothing from here on he could take out $4

million a day for the rest of his life (up to age 100). Let”s see, I

just went out to dinner for $30.

Paul Revere

On December 13, 1774, Paul Revere rode into Portsmouth, New

Hampshire from Boston with his distressing news. [As an aside, I

didn”t realize Revere had brought word of the Boston Tea Party

to New York City a year earlier]. The amazing horseman rode

60 miles through snow, ice and mud.

Why? Well, General Gage was going to move warships into

Piscataqua Harbor to keep Fort William and Mary from falling

into the hands of the rebels. You see, the Revolution was still a

clandestine affair at this point but, nonetheless, on the afternoon

of December 14, some 400 men of Portsmouth heeded the call.

Defending the fort was Captain John Cochran and 5.count

”em.5 men. The mob overpowered them and made off with 97

kegs of gunpowder which were then hidden throughout the area.

The next day they took another fort with 16 light canon, 60

muskets and some cannonballs. Soon thereafter, though, the HMS

Canceaux and HMS Scarborough arrived in Portsmouth Harbor.

That ended the uprising but the captured gunpowder needed just

a spark to set it off. [Source: American Heritage, Dec. issue]
