Real Estate

I thought that those of you who don”t live in the New York area

may get a kick out of real estate costs in Manhattan. The

following three properties are all on the east side of town, a few

blocks from the UN.

1-bedroom, 1-bath co-op, $415,000

2-bedroom, 2-bath co-op with fireplace, $729,000

2-bedroom, 3-bath co-op, terrace, fireplace, $2.2 million.

These are just apartments, folks!

And I just loved this New Mexico property listed by Sotheby”s:

Bordered by the 100,000 acre Valle Vidal Wilderness Preserve

and the 1,000,000+ acre Carson National Forest that spans the

distance to the Colorado border, this one-of-a-kind 3,250 acre

ranch is enclosed by approximately 12 miles of fence line, has

year-round access, and is less than 1 hour from airports in Taos,

Angel Fire and Raton. The totally secluded 2 year-old 14,600 sq.

ft. main house has 270 degrees panoramic views out to 50 miles.

This high elevation ranch is a blend of lush meadows with spring

fed trout ponds, mountain tops and Spruce and Aspen forests

teeming with elk, turkey, deer and bear and fully modernized

barns, caretakers residence and guest houses. $16,900,000.

Fatima / Follow-up

I wrote about the Secrets of Fatima on 5/17 in this space. On

Monday, the Vatican revealed the text of the Third Secret in a

move designed by the church to end speculation about the

world”s fate. The Vatican says it refers to the failed 1981

assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II, not world apocalypse

as many of the faithful believe.

In describing the third secret, in a 1944 letter, Sister Lucia de

Jesus dos Santos, now 93, wrote:

“We saw an Angel with a flaming sword in his left hand;

flashing, it gave out flames that looked as though they would set

the world on fire; but they died out in contact with the splendor

that Our Lady radiated towards him from her right hand: pointing

to the earth with his right hand, the Angel cried out in a loud

voice: ”Penance, Penance, Penance!”

“And we saw in an immense light that is God: ”something similar

to how people appear in a mirror when they pass in front of it” a

Bishop dressed in White ”we had the impression that it was the

Holy Father.” Other Bishops, Priests, men and women Religious

going up a steep mountain, at the top of which there was a big

Cross of rough-hewn trunks as of a cork-tree with the bark;

before reaching there the Holy Father passed through a big city

half in ruins and half trembling with halting step, afflicted with

pain and sorrow, he prayed for the souls of the corpses he met on

his way; having reached the top of the mountain, on his knees at

the foot of the big Cross he was killed by a group of soldiers who

fired bullets and arrows at him, and in the same way there died

one after another the other Bishops, Priests, men and women

Religious, and various lay people of different ranks and

positions.”

Aside from the notion that the message is really apocalyptic,

there are others who believe the text refers to the 1980

assassination of Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero, who was

killed by terrorists while celebrating Mass. [Source: AP]

John Daly

Sports Illustrated”s Michael Bamberger had the following

comment concerning golfer Daly”s latest screw-up, his

withdrawal after one round in the U.S. Open.

“What seems.likely is that he”ll wind up on the side of the road,

his limp body draped over a steering wheel.”

My buddy Johnny Mac and I would throw Mike Tyson into this

category, as well. Actually, we hope Tyson doesn”t take out 20

people with him.

New Jersey

Drat! The legislature just imposed a 5-year moratorium on bear

hunts. So you out-of-staters who I encouraged to get Jersey

hunting licenses are going to have to wait awhile, or until the

first child gets mauled and people wise up. [Or maybe we can

ship the bears to the above mentioned New Mexican ranch.]

Jayson Williams

One of the great people in the world of sports is being forced to

retire at the age of 32 due to the “displaced tibial plateau fracture

and torn meniscus” that he suffered in the spring of 1999.

Heroically, the New Jersey Nets star struggled to make it back

but to no avail. Williams will still earn $13.75 million next

season. [We love Jayson around these parts.]

Green Bay Six-Packers

Yes, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said in a

letter on Monday that the Green Bay Packers should change their

name because it promotes violence and bloodshed in referring to

meat packers and those who work in slaughterhouses. It was the

PETA rep who then, in turn, recommended a change to ”Six-

Packers,” in keeping with the state”s brewing heritage.

Top 3 songs for the week of 6/25/66: #1 “Paperback Writer”

(The Beatles) #2 “Strangers In The Night” (Frank Sinatra)

#3 “Paint It, Black” (The Rolling Stones.kind of interesting

sandwiching Francis Albert in the middle there).

Track Update: I forgot to mention in my last Bar Chat that there

is another high school athlete who is close to running the first

sub 4-minute mile since Marty Liquori in 1967, that being rising

senior Alan Webb of Reston, VA. Webb was “shut down” by his

coach and didn”t run in the Prefontaine meet last weekend. He

should be ready to assault the record book next spring.

Mike Tyson

So at the end of Saturday”s 38-second fight against Lou

Savarese, Tyson launched this tirade against champion Lennox

Lewis:

“I want your heart. I want to eat your children. Praise be to

Allah!” Ee-gads.

Captain Kangeroo

Bob Keeshan turned 73 on Tuesday. Geez, he looked 73 when I

was watching him 35 years ago! Sorry, Captain.
