Cruise Update: I will cover the America”s Cup next Tuesday, but
yesterday I was in Auckland, site of the races, and I took a
water taxi out to see all the boats and yachts. We are nearing
the base of Alinghi, the Swiss challenger to Team New Zealand,
when the two boats they have head out for practice against each
other. I mean to tell you, there was your editor, about 20 feet
from these two beauties with controversial Alinghi captain Russell
Coutts staring at me. I pulled out my new, super-duper camera for
some once in a lifetime shots and…the battery was dead! Doh!
All you can do is laugh in those instances.

Everyone in Auckland was saying ”sorry” to the Americans since
their boats didn”t get into the finals. I was like, hey, I”m
glad we lost. We had nothing but a bunch of a-holes involved,
especially chief / captain a-hole, Larry Ellison. The races
start February 15. If you care at all, root for Team New
Zealand…a win helps their economy big time. [I also just
invested in it.]

*One other item, on a different subject, I haven”t been following
sports that closely, except for Wake Forest basketball, but I
did see the LeBron James suspension. Remember how I said the
other week that I had just posted my only comment on retro sports
jerseys? Well look what got James in trouble. Being handed retros
of Gale Sayers and Wes Unseld.

February 6 is Ronald Reagan’s birthday. Here are a few quotes
from one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century.

“There is nothing wrong with America that Americans can’t fix.”

“You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for
our children this the last best hope of man on earth, or we will
sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of
darkness.”

“There is no institution more vital to our nation’s survival than
the American family. Here the seeds of personal character are
planted, the roots of public virtue first nourished. Through love
and instruction, discipline, guidance and example, we learn from
our mothers and fathers the values that will shape our private
lives and our public citizenship.”

“If we look to the answer as to why, for so many years, we
achieved so much, prospered as no other people on Earth, it was
because here, in this land, we unleashed the energy and genius of
man to a greater extent than has ever been done before.”

“ With our eyes fixed on the future, but recognizing the realities
of today…we will achieve our destiny to be as a shining city on a
hill for all mankind to see.”

“No…weapon in the arsenals of the world is so formidable as the
will and moral courage of free men and women.”

“Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have
come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the
first.”

“We will always remember. We will always be proud. We will
always be prepared, so we may always be free.” [D-Day
commemoration, 6/6/84.]

“Our time is now. If we carry the day and turn the tide, we can
hope that as long as men speak of freedom and those who have
protected it, they will remember us and they will say, ‘here were
the brave and here their place of honor.’”
