College Football Playoffs Set…Notre Dame loses out….

[Posted Sunday p.m., prior to late NFL action.]

Brief Add-on up top by noon, Tuesday.

NFL / Detroit Lions Quiz: pro-football-reference.com had a bit during the week, prior to Detroit-Dallas on Thursday night, on how Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs was moving up the Lions’ all-time rushing list.  He’s No. 7.  But there are some fun old-time names for you elderly fans out there, such as moi, so name the ten to rush for 3,000 yards in a Lions uniform.  I’ll give you No. 9, Ace Gutowsky, who played from 1932-38.  There are three who played parts of their career in the 1960s. Answer below.

Before I begin, today is the 84th anniversary of the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor and since then, survivors of the attack have been at the center of a remembrance ceremony held each year.

But today only 12 are still alive – all centenarians – and this is the first year none were able to make the pilgrimage to Hawaii to mark the event. Very sad.

It’s up to the rest of us never to forget.  More than 2,300 troops were killed that day in 1941, catapulting the U.S. into World War II.

College Football Review

–With the five highest-ranked conference champions guaranteed spots in the 12-team playoff field, and with the Big Ten, SEC and Big 12 assured of a presence, the ACC championship game between 17 Virginia (10-2) and unranked Duke (7-5), which qualified via a tiebreaker after a five-way tie for second-place with 12 Miami (10-2), 22 Georgia Tech (9-3) and previously ranked SMU (8-4) and Pitt (8-4), loomed large.

A win by Virginia and the ACC breathes a sigh of reliefA win by Duke would lead to 25 James Madison (12-1) getting a bid, JMU 31-14 winners of the Sun Belt Conference Championship over Troy (8-5) Friday night.  The Dukes had eight sacks, Troy with -26 yards rushing.

Also Friday night, 20 Tulane (11-2) wrapped up the Group of Five bid, 34-21 over 24 North Texas (11-2).  The Mean Green’s star running back, Caleb Hawkins, went out early with a shoulder injury and that hurt North Texas’ bigly.

So on to Saturday, and going into the Big 12 title game, BYU’s lone loss had been to Texas Tech, 29-7, as the Red Raiders totally manhandled the Cougars in Lubbock about a month ago.

And the rematch wouldn’t be much different.  It was 13-7 Texas Tech with 3:26 to go in the third when BYU QB Bear Bachmeier was picked off by star linebacker Ben Roberts deep in Cougar territory and one play later (and a 2-point conversion), it was 21-7 and the Red Raiders rolled, 34-7, Bachmeier turning it over two more times, including Robert’s second pick.

11 BYU (11-2) was eliminated from playoff contention, and 4 Texas Tech (12-1) seemed destined to get a bye.  What a defense they have.

On to the SEC championship and 3 Georgia (12-1) secured its bye in the first round with a dominating 28-7 win over 9 Alabama (10-3), the Crimson Tide potentially eliminated.

The Bulldogs’ Gunner Stockton was a cool and calm 20 of 26, 156, 3 touchdowns, while Bama’s Ty Simpson sure didn’t look like a Heisman contender, 19/39, 212, 1-1, Alabama held to just 209 yards of offense.

Georgia had been 0-4 against Bama in the SEC title game and 1-7 against the Crimson Tide under coach Kirby Smart.

And then we had the Big Ten championship, and 2 Indiana (13-0) completed its magical regular season under Coach Curt Cignetti, 13-10 over No. 1 Ohio State (12-1), IU’s first Big Ten title since 1967 and first outright since 1945!

Fernando Mendoza may have locked up the Heisman*, 15/23, 222, 1-1, with one terrific completion that sealed the victory, a clutch 33-yard pass to Charlie Becker on third down that took the clock down to the 2-minute timeout and it was basically game over.

*Ballots for the Heisman must be submitted by the end of tomorrow, Monday.

The Buckeyes had their chances but were stopped on a fourth-and-1 from the Indiana 5-yard line late in the third quarter, and with 2:48 to play, the normally reliable Jayden Fielding missed a 29-yard field goal that would have tied it up after an 81-yard drive.

And then Duke (8-5) completed the ACC’s nightmare scenario, beating 17 Virginia (10-3) in overtime, 27-20, the Cavaliers having driven it 96 yards for the tie late in the fourth.

The Selection Committee could thus easily leave out the ACC and give James Madison a bid, as well as Tulane.

Which means Nos. 1-8 in the CFP Rankings coming into the weekend, including Texas A&M, Oregon, Ole Miss and Oklahoma are in….Tulane, probably James Madison…and then it would come down to Alabama, Notre Dame and Miami for the other two spots.

And ACC fans were wondering if Miami could salvage our reputation some by gaining a spot over Notre Dame by virtue of their win in Week One over the Fighting Irish.

The Selection Committee then weighed in this afternoon…but first, the AP released its poll purposely before the committee.

  1. Indiana (66) 13-0
    2. Georgia 12-1
    3. Ohio State 12-1
    4. Texas Tech 12-1
    5. Oregon 11-1
    6. Ole Miss 11-1
    7. Texas A&M 11-1
    8. Oklahoma 10-2
    9. Notre Dame 10-2
    10. Miami 10-2
    11. Alabama 10-3
    12. BYU 11-2
    13. Vanderbilt 10-2
    14. Texas 9-3
    15. Utah 10-2
    16. USC 9-3
    17. Tulane 11-2
    18. Michigan 9-3
    19. James Madison 12-1
    20. Virginia 10-3
    21. Arizona 9-3
    22. Navy 9-2
    23. North Texas 11-2
    24. Georgia Tech 9-3
    25. Missouri 8-4

And then the Selection Committee weighed in and Notre Dame is out, done in by the head-to-head and the loss to Miami.

  1. Indiana 2. Ohio State 3. Georgia 4. Texas Tech….all with byes
  2. Oregon vs. 12 JMU; 6 Ole Miss vs. 11 Tulane; 7. Texas A&M vs. 10 Miami; 8. Oklahoma vs. 9 Alabama.

It all gets going Friday, Dec. 19, Alabama at Oklahoma, the other three on Sat., Dec. 20.

I feel sorry for Notre Dame, and you can quibble with a system that has two Group of Five schools in the final 12, but it’s all about the ACC and their tiebreaker for the championship game.  On ESPN’s selection show, Greg McElroy had the right idea.  There has to be a uniform tiebreaker, like just pick a particular ranking, like Sagarin.

Had Miami played in the championship game, rather than Duke, and Miami beat Virginia, Notre Dame is in the field and no JMU.

–In the FCS (D I-AA) playoffs, we had a huge upset, Illinois State (10-4) beat North Dakota State (12-1) – a team that legitimately received votes in the AP Top 25 earlier this week – 29-28.  The Bison hadn’t lost a game in over a year and had won 10 FCS titles from 2011 to 2024.  What made this even crazier, the Illinois State quarterback Tommy Rittenhouse threw five interceptions (one a pick-six)!

And Lehigh (12-1) was upset by Villanova (11-2) 14-7, turnovers costly for Lehigh.

Penn State hired Iowa State’s Matt Campbell, a very solid choice.

Year-after-year, college football afficionados wondered when Campbell would leave the Cyclones for a top ten job and Penn State, 54 days after firing James Franklin, finally made a decision and the two sides reportedly agreed on an 8-year deal.

But they missed out on a recruiting class!

Campbell was at Iowa State ten seasons, putting together a 72-55 record with a 3-4 mark in bowl games.

He wasn’t the Nittany Lions’ first choice, having been shunned by BYU’s Kalani Sitake, Indiana’s Curt Cignetti, Nebraska’s Matt Rhule, Texas A&M’s Mike Elko and Louisville’s Jeff Brohm, who all chose to stay at their respective schools despite reported interest from Happy Valley.

Kentucky hired Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein as its new head coach after firing Mark Stoops.

UCLA is hiring James Madison coach Bob Chesney to its top role after Chesney’s incredible two-season run that followed Curt Cignetti’s move to Indiana.

–The winner of National Signing Day and the 2026 recruiting class, according to 247 Sports, was USC, followed by Oregon, Alabama, Notre Dame, and Georgia.

Back when Pete Carroll was at the height of his powers at USC, the legendary coach made it a point to own the California recruiting scene.  In turning the Trojans into perennial title contenders, Carroll set out to “put a fence” around the Southland, to keep all of its top prospects at home…and it was a winning strategy.

It now seems that Lincoln Riley, actually starting last year, adopted the same strategy and this year it paid off.  This was the first time in almost two decades the Trojans inked the No. 1 class.

I was very pleased to see Wake Forest had 30 commitments, including a quarterback who most agree is top ten in the country.

NFL

Thursday night, the surging Cowboys (6-6-1) fell to the Lions (8-5) 44-30, the aforementioned Jahmyr Gibbs with three rushing touchdowns and seven receptions for 77 yards, while Amon-Ra St. Brown shook off his ankle injury to catch six passes for 92 yards, a gutty effort.

Dak Prescott was picked off twice.

But the three touchdown game gave Gibbs 47 in his first three seasons, tied with Hall of Famer Barry Sanders, with HOFers Earl Campbell, Eric Dickerson and Gale Sayers behind.

Gibbs actually has his 47 in fewer games (45) than Campbell, Dickerson or Sanders did (46) through their first three years.  Sayers scored his first 46 in just 41 games.

Today, the Colts squared off against the Jaguars in an important AFC South tussle, both 8-4, and Indy quarterback Daniel Jones went down with a non-contact Achilles injury to his right leg at the end of the first quarter, and this could be disastrous for the Colts.

Jones, having his best season, had been playing through a fractured fibula in his left leg.

And Indy (8-5) went on to lose 36-19, the Jags (9-4) taking the lead in the division.

Earlier this week, Indianapolis released Summit, N.J.’s Michael Badgley after his critical missed extra point last week, Badgley having missed three of 21 extra-point attempts this season, while making 10 of 11 field goals.  You just can’t miss that many.

Such a shame.  I’ve talked to him a bunch of times.  Great kid.  But it’s the hardest job in all of sports, in terms of the stress factor.  Your career in many cases is on the line with each game.

–The Bills are 9-4, 39-34 over the Bengals (4-9) in snowy Buffalo.  It was 21-11 Cincy at the half, the Bengals then remaining in control, when suddenly Joe Burrow was picked off twice, on two consecutive passes, the first returned for a touchdown, the second setting up another score, and kind of out of nowhere, Buffalo won it.

Josh Allen had a terrific day…22/28, 251, 3-0, 139.7, and nine carries for 78 yards and another touchdown.

–The Bucs (7-6) suffered an awful loss at home to the Saints (3-10), 24-20, as Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay offense sucked.

So the Bucs are tied with the Panthers in the NFC South.  Wow.

Remember when Baker was the favorite to be league MVP?  He’s been lousy the last four games.

–Seattle (10-3) took care of business in Atlanta (4-9) 37-9.

–My Jets are 3-10, falling 34-10 to the Dolphins (6-7) who have won four straight. With the option of watching Bengals-Bills, I probably watched less of my team today than I have in years.

–And Pittsburgh (7-6) went to Baltimore (6-7) and won a critical one in the AFC North, 27-22, as Aaron Rodgers (23/34, 284, 1-0, 103.1) and his receivers, namely DK Metcalf (7-148) were on the same page, unlike recent weeks, fans, incredibly, calling for Mike Tomlin to be fired.

–For the record, going back to Thanksgiving Day, the audience for Packers-Lions in Detroit on Fox was 47.7 million, per Nielsen, making it the network’s biggest regular-season game ever and the most watched Thanksgiving game on record in the early broadcast window.

The late afternoon game, Chief-Cowboys in Dallas drew a massive 57.23 million – the largest audience ever, on any network, for an NFL regular season game.

College Basketball

Going back to Tuesday, after I posted my Add-on, we had a bunch of big ones involving the Top 25.

No. 1 Purdue (8-0) beat Rutgers (5-4) on the road, 81-65.

In a terrific game, 4 Duke (9-0) edged defending national champion 15 Florida (5-3) 67-66 at Cameron Indoor.

5 UConn (7-1) defeated 21 Kansas (6-3) 61-56.

Syracuse (5-3) got a big win for the ACC, 62-60 over 13 Tennessee (7-2).

16 North Carolina (7-1) beat 18 Kentucky (5-3) 67-64.

But Wake Forest (6-3) lost a key contest at home to Oklahoma (6-2) 86-68.  The Deacs didn’t show up, inexcusably so, and were outrebounded 42-24.

Wednesday, 6 Louisville (7-1) lost at 25 Arkansas (6-2) 89-80.

And 22 Indiana (7-1) fell at Minnesota (5-4) 73-64.

Friday, 11 Gonzaga (8-1) blasted 18 Kentucky (5-4) 94-59 in Nashville.  Bye-bye Wildcats in terms of the top 25.

And then on SaturdayNo. 1 Purdue (8-1) suffered its first loss, blitzed 81-58 by 10 Iowa State (9-0) at home. I still say Purdue has the most balanced team and will win it all, but the Cyclones aren’t too shabby themselves.

So we’ll have a change at the top, as 2 Arizona (8-0) whipped 20 Auburn (7-3) 97-68.

3 Michigan (8-0) annihilated Rutgers (5-5) 101-60, the worst loss for Steve Pikiell at RU.

4 Duke (10-0) had an impressive win at 7 Michigan State (8-1) 66-60, Caleb Foster with the key 3-pointer down the stretch for the Blue Devils, who had a rather good day all around for their athletic program…and good week!

Freshman sensation Cam Boozer had 18 points, 15 rebounds and five assists.

6 Louisville (8-1) had a good bounce-back win against 22 Indiana (7-2) 87-78.

10 Illinois (7-2) defeated 13 Tennessee (7-3) 75-62.

And 23 St. John’s (5-3) got a needed win against Ole Miss (5-4) at the Garden, 63-58.

Lastly, Wake Forest also got a much-needed ‘W’ to move to 7-3, 75-66 over West Virginia (7-3) in Charleston.  Juke Harris, after picking up two quick fouls and exiting at the 15:00 mark of the first half, came back to score 28 in 26 minutes for the Deacs on 7 of 12 shooting from three.  Yes, this guy has taken a major leap from freshman to sophomore year.

NBA

The Knicks have been on a roll…but Tuesday in Boston, it was a tail of two quarters, the Knicks getting blown out 73-44, combined, in the second and third quarters, after winning the first 32-21 and the fourth 41-29.  In the end, Jaylen Brown had 42 for the Celts on 16 of 24 shooting in the 123-117 win and surprising Boston was 12-9, the Knicks 13-7.

But Wednesday night the Knicks beat the Hornets at MSG, 119-104, as Karl-Anthony Towns had a monster game, 35 points, 18 rebounds, five assists; the first Knick to have 35-18-5 in a game since David Lee (37-20-10) in 2010.

Friday night, also at the Garden, the Knicks got off to their best start ever (since play-by-play tracking began in 1996-97), 23-0*, led 41-13 after one, and cruised 146-112 over Utah (8-14), their most points since 1980.  Guard Miles McBride had 22 points in 22 minutes, hitting 7 of 10 from three, making him 27 of his last 42 from beyond the arc, an absurd 64 percent.  [Jalen Brunson had 33 points.]

*The NBA record for a start to a game is 29-0, set by the Lakers against the Kings on Feb. 4, 1987.  So I looked up the game.  It was 40-4 after one!  This would be an NBA championship Laker team, with a starting five of Magic, Byron Scott, Kareem, A.C. Green and James Worthy, with Kurt Rambis and Michael Cooper off the bench.  Anyway, the final score was 128-92.

So, New York was 15-7, 12-1 at home, as they geared up for a noon game, Sunday, against the tough Magic at MSG.

And the Knicks are now 16-7, 13-1, with a 106-100 win over Orlando (14-10).  But Miles McBride left the game in the first half with an injury (after going 0 for 5 from three, ironically) and didn’t return…status unknown.

–Thursday night, LeBron James saw his stupendous 1,297-game streak of scoring at least 10 points end, tallying just eight points in the Lakers’ 123-120 victory over the Raptors.

Despite having the chance to break the 10-point threshold with just seconds left in the game, James dished the ball to Lakers forward Rui Hachimura for the game-winning shot in Toronto.

James shot an abysmal 4 of 17 from the field and 0 for 5 from beyond the arc while racking up six rebounds and 11 assists.

Asked by reporters whether he had any negative thoughts after breaking the streak, James’ answer was simple.

“None.  We won.”

–The Hawks (14-11) beat the Wizards (3-19) Saturday, 131-116, which I only mention because Atlanta’s Jalen Johnson, who turns 24 soon, is blossoming into a real star in his fifth season out of Duke.

Johnson had 30 points 12 rebounds, 12 assists Saturday, his second straight triple-double, and third in five games.  As Ronald Reagan would have said to Nancy, Nancy making blueberry pancakes, the former president reading the Sunday sports pages, ‘Not bad, not bad at all.’

–In a rather stunning move, the L.A. Clippers announced that Chris Paul is no longer on the team, doing it in the dead of night Tuesday (3:00 AM Wednesday ET).  Paul was sent home to Los Angeles from Atlanta, where the Clippers were playing the Hawks Wednesday night.

Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank texted a statement to ESPN confirming Paul was no longer on the team.

“We are parting ways with Chris and he will no longer be with the team,” Frank said.  “We will work with him on the next step of his career.”

Frank said in the statement: “I want to make one thing very clear. No one is blaming Chris for our underperformance.  I accept responsibility for the record we have right now. There are a lot of reasons why we’ve struggled.  We’re grateful for the impact Chris has made on the franchise.”

Paul had rejoined the Clippers in late July on a one-year deal. For Paul, 40, this was a chance to return home and finish his career with the franchise he spent six seasons with, from 2011 to 2017.  He remains the franchise leader in total assists and steals per game.

Paul had played in 16 games, averaging 2.9 points and 3.3 assists in 14 minutes.

So what happened?  Well, some of us know of Chris Paul from way back…back to his days with Wake Forest.  I’ve written of him countless times and I’m not going to repeat it all, just to say I’ve had a hard time forgiving him ever since he punched an opposing player in the groin during his second season at Wake, which caused a cascading series of events that in all likelihood cost us a very real shot at the Final Four, which we still haven’t been back to since 1962.

In a nutshell, a lot of people in the NBA really don’t like the guy.

At the same time, he’s a deserving future Hall of Famer. One of the greats.

–We note the passing of Elden Campbell, 57.  He died from an accidental drowning during a fishing trip in Pompano Beach, Florida, apparently suffering a medical emergency.

Campbell was a terrific star center at Clemson and the school’s all-time scoring leader before playing 15 seasons in the NBA.

A 6-foot-11 big man known for his smooth athleticism and laid-back style on the court, he starred at Clemson from 1986 to 1990, scoring 1,880 points with the Tigers, before the Lakers drafted him with the 27th pick in 1990. He played his first 8 ½ seasons with the team.

As a freshman, Campbell helped the Tigers to a 25-6 record and the NCAA Tournament as former NBA great Horace Grant’s backup center in 1986-87.  Campbell then took over, averaging a career-best 18.8 points per game as a sophomore. He earned second-team All-ACC honors as a junior while averaging 17.5 points per game as the Tigers made a run to the NCAA Tournament.

As a senior, Campbell and Dale Davis led Clemson to a 26-9 record in the school’s lone ACC regular-season title, advancing to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 under Coach Cliff Ellis.

In his 15-year NBA career, Campbell averaged 10.3 points and 5.9 rebounds.

Premier League

In weekend action, the teams having played earlier midweek, Aston Villa had a huge win at home Saturday against Arsenal, 2-1; Chelsea and Bournemouth played to a 0-0 draw; Manchester City shutout Sunderland 3-0; Tottenham beat Brentford 2-0; and Liverpool could manage only a point at lowly Leeds, 3-3…all six goals in this one in an exciting second half, but the Reds allowed Leeds to score the equalizer right at the end of stoppage-time…brutal.

The standings after 15 of 38 played…points

Arsenal 33
Man City 31…wow, so much for the huge lead….
Aston Villa 30…have won five straight….
Crystal Palace 26
Chelsea 25
Everton 24…good to see….
Brighton 23
Sunderland 23
Liverpool 23

World Cup

–Come June, this country of ours will totally become involved in the World Cup, which commences June 11, with the final at MetLife Stadium on July 19.

It would help if the U.S. met the challenge, and they drew Paraguay, Australia, and a playoff winner to be determined for Group play.

Thirty-two of the 48 (up from 32 teams in the last World Cup) then move to the knockout stages, and the U.S. should certainly do enough against the first three opponents to warrant moving on.  At that point, anything can happen and this place would be at a fever pitch, let alone we’ll have a big Fourth of July celebration across the country during this period.

It’s going to be a ton of fun…and we’ll finally get people back into bars!  [I’m talking to you, young people.  Drink!]

One of the many side stories, aside from Argentina* and Lionel Messi, will be Norway and the superstar Erling Haaland.  Hopefully, the Norwegians make it to at least the Quarterfinals.

Haaland on Tuesday reached the 100-goal mark in the Premier League in just his 111th game, eclipsing Alan Shearer by 13 matches.

Only 35 players in Premier League history have scored 100 times.

*The four highest-ranked teams are: Spain, Argentina, France and England.  FIFA changed the draw to create separate pathways to the semifinals for the four, which means if Spain and Argentina win their groups, the world’s Nos. 1 and 2 teams can not meet prior to the final.

Golf Balls

Tiger Woods appeared at his Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas and made it clear he is not close to returning on tour, including as a senior on the PGA Tour Champions, seeing as he is about to turn 50.

Having endured his seventh back procedure, this one a disk replacement surgery on Oct. 10, Woods said he was just cleared to start putting and chipping…that’s it.

Riviera?  The Masters?  Not looking good, especially for Riviera.

But also at the Hero World Challenge, PGA Tour Ceo Brian Rolapp and board director Woods addressed the top players to discuss future changes to the tour, which are coming…some perhaps rather drastic.

Whatever they come up could start as soon as 2027, including starting the season later so as not to compete with the NFL Playoffs and, maybe even the Super Bowl.

The tour’s leadership is deciding whether to implement the significant changes all at once or in stages.

The committee the two head up has met with various stakeholders – from fans to sponsors to tournament directors and media partners.

Rolapp has previously emphasized the importance of scarcity, with rumors of the Tour reducing the number of tournaments and possibly waiting until after the Super Bowl to kick off the season.  World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has said he met with Rolapp late in the season and was impressed.

But nothing’s set.  Woods said there is still some heavy-lifting to be done – including a decision whether to “rip the Band-Aid off, create a whole new product, or do it in stages.”

Stuff

Lando Norris, the 26-year-old Brit, won his first world drivers’ championship in Abu Dhabi today.  Norris just needed to finish on the podium to win the F1 title and he did just that, four-time defending champion Max Verstappen winning the race but falling just short in the season-long chase.

Norris’ McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri finished second, and third in the final standings.

There was little drama in the final race.

Inter Miami’s grand Lionel Messi experiment paid off with a Major League Soccer championship, beating the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 on Saturday.

Messi joined Inter Miami in the summer of 2023 and immediately helped the club claim its first-ever trophy in the cross-border Leagues Cup.  In 2024, Messi won his first league MVP award and led Miami to the Supporter’s Shield (best regular season record), but the team was upset in the first round of the playoffs.

–The New York Rangers (15-12-3) would struggle to make the NHL playoffs as things stand today (though all eight teams in the Metropolitan division are within five points of each other), but what a strange season it has been thus far.  New York suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss to the mighty Colorado Avalanche (20-2-6) Saturday at the Garden, 3-2, after Artemi Panarin had tied it up for the Rangers at the 19:18 mark of the third period.

But get this…New York is 3-8-2 at home, 12-4-1 on the road!

–In World Cup Alpine action this weekend, the women had two giant slaloms at Mont Tremblant in Quebec and Mikaela Shiffin failed to make the podium in either (actually, not sure if she raced in the second, having finished sixth Saturday).

The men were in Beaver Creek, CO, and American Ryan Cochran-Siegle picked up a second in a downhill race, the first American to make the podium this season for the men’s team.  Americans have a way of surprising at the downhill in the Olympics.  Ya never know, boys and girls.

–The Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina are just around the corner and the hockey arena isn’t close to being finished!  And there is no backup stadium.

This is a huge issue as NHL players are back to the Olympics for the first time in more than a decade and the league is not going to like playing on a rink that is not up to snuff.

“There is no plan B,” Andrea Francisi, the chief games operations officer for Milan Cortina, told the Associated Press last week.

The first scheduled Olympic hockey game at the arena is a women’s preliminary round match on Feb. 5, one day before the opening ceremony.

The rink is also a bit smaller than NHL specifications and the league is concerned this could create more injuries due to the speed of the game.

–For us locals in the New York media market, we learned that it is likely Craig Carton is returning to WFAN – again.  Some of us despise the guy.  My brother, good friend Pete being among those who just don’t understand what others seem to see in him.
