An Ugly Scorecard

An Ugly Scorecard

There has been a flood of articles on the Internet and Web-

related companies that have either seen their share price collapse,

or have gone out of business altogether. So I thought it was

necessary to come up with my own list. When we check back

about a year from now, I”m sure we”ll find that well over 50% of

those listed below are finished as going concerns. Hopefully,

you haven”t been suffering along with some of these. If so, you

have my sympathy. At the same time, however, this is Wall

Street history in the making and 100 years from now, the Crash

we have witnessed in the technology sector, particularly with

Net-related companies, will rank right up there with Tulipmania.

All of the following derive a large, if not 100%, portion of their

revenues through Web-related businesses; things such as B-to-B,

Net data collection, Web applications software, e-commerce

software, consulting, Net access and Web hosting, travel

services, incubators, digital greetings, online insurance, gender

specific networks, and online direct marketing.

I list each stock”s high going back to 10/2/99 (14-plus months) as

well as the price on 12/11/00. Many of these issues, like

theGlobe.com, achieved far greater share prices before this

period. But I had to set the bar somewhere. And just since

12/11, many of these have collapsed an additional 50%!

*I purposefully omitted some high profile names like Yahoo!,

Amazon, and eBay. Just using my editorial prerogative.
