Rock On!

College Football Quiz: Thanks to a great book I have, “Fifty
Years of College Football” by Bob Boyles and Paul Guido, an
absolute must for football junkies that spans the years 1955-
2004, for the rest of the month it’s nothing but this topic.

The following all pertain to AP national champs, and with each
question there is one part of it I assume will be very tough:

1) 1969 / Texas: Name the QB and the three leading running
backs. [Wishbone]
2) 1970-71 / Nebraska: Name the QB, the leading rusher
(different each year), and the leading receiver (same for ’70 and
‘71). [In 1970 Texas was UPI champ]
3) 1975 / Oklahoma: Name the QB and three leading running
backs. [Wishbone]
4) 1976 / Pitt: Name the QB and the two leading rushers.
Answers below.

60s Music

The other day, as part of some work I was doing on my
upcoming 30th high school reunion, I sent out a list to the group
of the Top Ten songs for June 1976. It was dreadful, as everyone
readily agreed. [“Shannon,” “Afternoon Delight,” “Get Up And
Boogie,” “Silly Love Songs,”….you get the picture.]

Of course we all know the best rock ‘n’ roll is from the 60s and
while I view this era as stretching from 1964-75 (until disco), I
thought we’d examine the period 1964-69, selecting four uniform
timeframes for each year… mid-Feb., mid-May, mid-Aug., and
mid-Nov.

Clip this and save to settle family arguments or drunken
boozefests at the beach.

Stuff

–With Veterans Day on Saturday, I was glancing through some
books in the old library here and picked out a story from Gary
Bloomfield’s “Duty, Honor, Victory: America’s Athletes in
World War II.”

“One of the most remarkable stories surrounds Bert Shepard, a
young pitcher in the Pacific Coast and Arizona-Texas Leagues,
who joined the Army Air Corps and was assigned to the Fifty-
fifth Fighter Group in England. On May 21, 1944, Shepard
volunteered for a mission to Berlin, flying a P-38 fighter bomber.
After dropping down to tree-top level to do a strafing run on a
Nazi aerodrome seventy miles from the German capital, Shepard
saw other planes in front of him get chewed up in a crossfire of
flak. ‘I’m a mile from the field and they shot my right foot off.’
He was also hit in the chin and lost consciousness. His plane
crashed and exploded. Somehow he survived and was pulled out
of the wreckage and taken to a prisoner of war camp, where a
German doctor amputated what was left of his leg below the
knee.

“Another prisoner at the camp made him an artificial stump, and
soon Shepard was strengthening his leg, even working on his
pitching motion, intent on fulfilling his dream of someday
pitching in the major leagues.

“In January 1945 Shepard was part of an exchange of wounded
prisoners. Seven months later, his dream came true when he was
sent in as a relief pitcher for the Washington Senators against the
Red Sox. He entered the game with the score 14-1 against the
Senators, pitched five innings, and gave up just one run – a
respectable outing for any pitcher, let alone one with an artificial
leg. It would be Shepard’s only big-league appearance, but it
was an inspiring moment for thousands of other disabled
veterans. He would continue to play in exhibition games around
the country, talking to and inspiring hundreds of former
servicemen.”

–I watched the Country Music Association Awards the other
night and while I listen to country on a fairly regular basis, I
thought the music presented was pretty awful. As for Faith
Hill’s reaction to Carrie Underwood, Hill’s denial of taking her
loss too seriously rings rather hollow.

–Mark R. had an excellent point on the Steelers’ Ben
Roethlisberger and the QB’s health. With the Steelers now out
of the playoff hunt, sit Ben down for the rest of the year. His
brain will be mush with another wicked hit. Why risk the kid’s
future in a lost cause? There are far too many examples of
players taking one too many to the head and Roethlisberger is a
headslap from major trouble.

–College Football PICKS TO CLICK!

Maryland, giving 2 ½ vs. Miami
UL-Lafayette, giving 11 vs. North Texas
Boise State, giving 13 vs. San Jose State

Can your editor improve on his 11-10 record thus far?

[Reminder…children under four cannot bet the requisite
$250,000 per game.]

–University of Miami defensive end Bryan Pata, a once probable
NFL draft pick next spring, was shot to death on Tuesday night
outside his apartment complex. No arrest or word on motive as
of this writing. Nice year for the Hurricanes, by the way…and
this latest incident is just great for recruiting.

–John Daly has Britney beat by two…Daly filed for divorce
from wife no. 4. Sherrie Miller Daly recently finished serving a
federal sentence for her involvement in a drug and gambling
ring.

–NASCAR…two races to go.

1. Jimmie Johnson
2. Matt Kenseth…17 points behind
3. Dale Earnhardt Jr….-78
4. Denny Hamlin…-80
5. Kevin Harvick…-105

Meanwhile, Tony Stewart, who isn’t in the chase for the title, has
won the last two events and has five wins on the year.

–Sad story…1,000 orangutans have died in forest fires in
Borneo. Only about 30,000 remain.

–Attention quail hunters. Quail Unlimited has a pretty cool web
site…www.qu.org…if you plan on going hunting the next few
weeks. [Quail tips…another free feature of Bar Chat.]

–Paul Azinger was named captain of the 2008 Ryder Cup team
and he’s immediately instituted some good changes, like four
captain’s picks instead of two, some of whom could be named
before the traditional day after the PGA. He’s also revamping
the criteria to focus more on actual money earned. Azinger
himself has said on more than one occasion that he has only
choked over cash and prestige during his 20 years on tour.

–Tiger Woods is getting into the golf course design business,
which means you can count on lots of 240-yard par-3s (from the
whites) and 645-yard par-5s (from the ladies’ tees).

–Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov is encouraging the development
of ten new golf courses in the Moscow area. It’s estimated the
number of golfers there will grow from 5,000 to 25,000 over the
next few years, though I’d be careful if you’re asked to round out
a foursome, especially if you see a probable mob boss use the old
foot wedge. Whatever you do don’t question the move.

–Former pitcher Johnny Sain died at 89. Sain was 139-116
during his 11 years in the big leagues, including four, 20-win
seasons while with the Boston Braves. It was during the 1948
season, as the Braves marched to the World Series, that Sain and
fellow hurler Warren Spahn became part of the saying “Spahn
and Sain and pray for rain.”

Boston Post sports editor Gerald Hern had written a poem:

First we’ll use Spahn, then we’ll use Sain,
Then an off day, followed by rain.

Back will come Spahn, followed by Sain,
And followed, we hope, by two days of rain.

Which wasn’t really fair to the other two starters, Bill Voiselle
(13-13, 3.63 ERA) and Vern Bickford (11-5, 3.27 ERA).

–Sid Davis, who created more than 180 short films on topics like
safety and social-guidance, passed away at the age of 90. Yes,
he is the one who terrified many of us in our youth with films
such as “What Made Sammy Speed?” that were shown in
classrooms across America in an attempt to shape our behavior.
Davis once did a film featuring his daughter, “Live and Learn,”
where she cuts out paper dolls and then jumps up, trips and
impales herself on the scissors.

But here’s a cool angle. John Wayne lent Davis his seed money
to start his production company and Davis, the same 6’ 4” as
Wayne, used to be a stand-in for him (1941-52) and the two
played chess together between takes.

So as reported by Valerie Nelson of the Los Angeles Times,
“When Davis had made enough money from his films to begin
paying back Wayne, he wrote him a check for $5,000. ‘Wayne
tore up the check,’ Sid’s daughter recalled, ‘and said, ‘Put it back
in the business.’’”

Ya gotta love The Duke.

–Paul Mauriat, composer of the above noted 1968 hit “Love Is
Blue,” died at the age of 81. A Frenchman, Mauriat began
conducting his own orchestra during World War II.

–Tony Bennett is #4 on the latest Billboard Pop chart that I saw
for his “Duets: An American Classic” album.

Top 3 songs for the week of 11/9/74: #1 “You Ain’t Seen
Nothing Yet” (Bachman-Turner Overdrive) #2 “Jazzman”
(Carole King) #3 “Whatever Gets You Thru The Night” (John
Lennon with the Plastic Ono Nuclear Band)…and…#4 “Tin
Man” (America) #8 “The Bitch Is Back” (Elton John)
