New England Patriots Quiz: 1) Most receptions, career? 2) Most
TD, career? 3) Most rushing yards, career? 4) Most passing
yards, career? Answers below.
Jimmy Carter.Lusting
Yes, sports fans, it was 25 years ago that presidential candidate
Jimmy Carter was running for the White House when on
September 20, the interview he did for Playboy magazine (the
November issue, I believe), became public. Ordinarily, it
wouldn”t have been a big deal that he sat down for such a thing,
but there was a crucial little passage that gained quite a bit of
attention.
But first, Carter had a few interesting comments, before he got in
trouble.
Playboy: How do you feel about the media in general and about
the job they do in covering the election issues?
Carter: Issues? The local media are interested, all right, but the
national news media have absolutely no interest in issues at all.
Sometimes we freeze out the national media so we can open up
press conferences to local people. At least we get questions from
them – on timber management, on health care, on education. But
the traveling press have zero interest in any issue unless it”s a
matter of making a mistake. What they”re looking for is a 47-
second argument between me and another candidate or
something like that. There”s nobody in the back of this plane
who would ask an issue question unless he thought he could trick
me into some crazy statement.
[Maybe true, Jimmy, but not real wise, as he found out when he
got into office.]
Playboy: In preparing for this interview, we spoke with your
mother, your son Chip and your sister Gloria. We asked them
what single action would most disappoint them in a Carter
Presidency. They all replied that it would be if you ever sent
troops to intervene in a foreign war. In fact, Miss Lillian said she
would picket the White House.
Carter: They share my views completely.
[Granted, this was 1976, one year after the end of the Vietnam
War. But don”t you find this rather bizarre? Thank God Ronald
Reagan came along when he did. Imagine how unprepared we
would have been, otherwise, for the effort needed to win the Gulf
War.]
Playboy was finishing up the interview when, “as the interviewer
and the editor stood at the door, recording equipment in their
arms, a final, seemingly casual question was tossed off. Carter
then delivered a long, softly spoken monolog that grew in
intensity as he made his final points. One of the journalists
signaled to Carter that they were still taping, to which Carter
nodded his assent.”
Playboy: Do you feel you”ve reassured people with this
interview, people who are uneasy about your religious beliefs,
who wonder if you”re going to make a rigid, unbending
President?
Carter: I don”t know if you”ve been to Sunday school here yet;
some of the press has attended. I teach there about every three or
four weeks. It”s a good way to learn what I believe and what the
Baptists believe..
[Carter really starts to ramble. Then.]
I try not to commit a deliberate sin. I recognize that I”m going to
do it anyhow, because I”m human and I”m tempted. And Christ
set some almost impossible standards for us. Christ said, “I tell
you that anyone who looks on a woman with lust has in his heart
already committed adultery.”
I”ve looked on a lot of women with lust. I”ve committed adultery
in my heart many times. This is something that God recognizes I
will do – and I have done it – and God forgives me for it. But
that doesn”t mean that I condemn someone who not only looks
on a woman with lust but who leaves his wife and shacks up with
somebody out of wedlock.
Christ says, Don”t consider yourself better than someone else
because one guy screws a whole bunch of women while the other
guy is loyal to his wife.
[And Jimmy just goes on and on.finally.]
But I don”t think I would ever take on the same frame of mind
that Nixon or Johnson did – lying, cheating and distorting the
truth. Not taking into consideration my hope for my strength of
character, I think that my religious beliefs alone would prevent
that from happening to me. I have that confidence. I hope it”s
justified.
[Well, there you have it. Yes, in hindsight, he told the truth.
And the interview didn”t hurt him too much at the polls, though
Ford almost pulled it off. But Carter was a miserable president.]
Hillary
I didn”t see this story when it first occurred, but the New York
Post covered it last week. It seems that on October 14, Hillary
and her secret service detail were rushing to Westchester County
Airport. Westchester County Police Officer Ernest Dymond was
part of the stepped up, post-9/11 security at the main gate when
the van carrying Hillary approached.
But rather than stop, it rolled toward the police at 35 mph and
drove right through the checkpoint. Dymond yelled for it to stop,
and injured his shoulder while banging on the side of the van.
Finally the van stopped about 300 feet beyond and Dymond
described Clinton”s driver as “quite agitated” when he asked him
for identification.
Poor Dymond had no clue, initially, if this guy was a terrorist,
but when he found out who was in that car he got rather upset.
Hillary was in the back, chatting away on her cell phone and did
not talk to Dymond. A Secret Service spokesman later claimed
there was “a little confusion” about whether Clinton”s motorcade
should stop or not.
Dymond checked into the hospital for his injury and was released
shortly thereafter. Clinton”s spokeswoman told the Post: “The
local police have said that she has nothing to do with this, and
the Secret Service has made clear that some of the local police
waved her through.” No one from the Senator”s office called to
apologize to the officer. And Hillary probably wonders why she
was booed by the cops and firefighters when she took the stage at
the Concert for New York at Madison Square Garden.
Katie Sierra.up and coming Hillary
Katie is a 15-year-old sophomore at Sissonville High School in
West Virginia. The other day a judge ruled that she couldn”t
form an anarchy club nor wear T-shirts opposing the U.S.
bombing of Afghanistan because it would disrupt school.
Katie wanted to wear T-shirts with messages such as: “When I
saw the dead and dying Afghani children on TV, I felt a newly
recovered sense of national security. God Bless America.”
Huh?
After the court ruling, Sierra added, “I don”t want war. I”m not
for Afghanistan, (but) I think that what we”re doing to them is
just as bad as what they did to us, and I think it needs to be
stopped.” Huh? This girl must have the stupidest parents on the
planet. We”re going to send Katie a subscription to
StocksandNews.
Dennis Rodman
Speaking of confused, messed up individuals, Rodman was just
told by a court in Las Vegas to cough up $80,000 for rubbing
dice on a casino dealer. According to the Star-Ledger, former
craps dealer James Brasich claimed Rodman humililated him
when he assaulted (my term) Brasich with the dice. It is the first
of a series of lawsuits to go to trial against Rodman by people
who say he mistreated them in Vegas casinos. The jury
deliberated only an hour.
New Jersey”s Black Bears
You know, there are some things you just can”t make up. A
while back, I told you that New Jersey”s black bear population
was up to 1,400. Well, the Star-Ledger has a new wildlife
reporter, Mark McGarrity, and he has a story out which says the
population may be much higher. McGarrity”s source? “Barrie
Beaver of Sussex.”
Using his own observations on the number of cubs born the past
few years, as well as those bears he has seen without tags while
he was working on his various dam projects, Beaver said, “I
think the bear population is probably much nearer to 2,000.”
Never, ever doubt the judgment of a beaver. Good job,
McGarrity.
Movie Alert
There are two war flicks coming out sooner than originally
planned due to the national mood, and I have to mention them
because you may want to do a little homework before heading to
the theater.
The first is “Black Hawk Down,” coming January 18. This is the
story of the mission in Somalia to capture warlord Adid, which
ended with 18 Rangers losing their lives. But our soldiers were
truly heroic in this horrific firefight, killing, by most estimates,
some 700 before they were able to get to safety. This battle was
also the reason why President Clinton refused to risk even one
soldier in any conflict thereafter. Anyway, check out PBS.org and
“Frontline.” They had a program last week on the battle.
The second is “We Were Soldiers,” starring Mel Gibson and due
out in March. This is the tale of Ia Drang, the first major battle
of Vietnam. If you haven”t done so, please read the book, “We
Were Soldiers Once.and Young,” by Lt. Gen Harold G. Moore
and Joseph Galloway. It is one of the great books of all time and
should be read before viewing the flick. The studio just
previewed the movie and “you could hear a pin drop.”
Top 3 songs for the week of 11/7/70: #1 “I”ll Be There” (The
Jackson 5) #2 “We”ve Only Just Begun” (Carpenters) #3 “Fire
And Rain” (James Taylor)
Rutgers…Sucks!
Wow, it just doesn”t get any worse than this. On Saturday,
Rutgers, the, ahem, state university of New Jersey, trailed a poor
West Virginia team 59-0 at half! Final score – West Virginia 80,
Rutgers 7.
Check out these offensive numbers. 19-147, 6-129, 6-65. No,
those aren”t pass receiving stats, that”s rushing! 19 carries,
147 yards, etc. West Virginia ran for a total of 446 yards on 48
carries.
