Formula One Quiz: On Sunday, Kimi Antonelli is looking to become the youngest F1 champ ever this Sunday at the Mexican Grand Prix. But the reason why I’m doing this quiz is because he would also become just the second Italian driver to win the title since Alberto Ascari in 1953. Think about that. The first F1 championship was awarded in 1950. Italy has three titles, all between 1950 and 1953. Name the nine nations that have four or more titles. Answer below.
World Series
To wrap things up, since my last post the Brewers finished off the Rays 4-1 in Game 5 at Tropicana Field, Wednesday, where thousands of Milwaukee fans gathered for the vacation of a lifetime. Founded in 1970 as the Seattle Pilots, it’s the first championship since the 1957 Milwaukee Braves. [The Milwaukee Bucks have two NBA titles.]
The Brewers played 13 games in this postseason, won 11 and trailed in nine of them. They steamrolled the 100-win, two-time defending champion Dodgers in four, and beat the 98-win Rays in five.
Even in Game 3, in which the Brewers didn’t trail, the team still made history with an eight-run inning. And after a hiccup in Game 4 against the Rays, who had that exciting 12th-inning comeback, the Brewers trotted out Jacob Misiorowski and he restored order with 5 2/3 of shutout ball.
Catcher William Contreras cemented himself in World Series, and Milwaukee, lore with a terrific Series for which he was awarded the MVP trophy. Contreras hit .381 (8-for-21) with four RBIs, but most of his damage came from behind
the plate as he threw out four runners trying to steal in the first four games, the first catcher to do that since Lance Parrish in 1984 with the Tigers.
Through all this great playoff run, however, the Brewers were channeling the spirit of Bob Uecker, whose presence remained a big part of the Brewers’ culture since he died last year, and in the franchise’s biggest moment Wednesday night, Christian Yelich made sure the beloved broadcaster wasn’t forgotten.
“He’s smiling, man,” Yelich said to Ken Rosenthal. “I really wish he could have been here to see this. It would have meant everything to him, but we said a bunch, he’s been with us a lot. We keep him close to our hearts, and this one’s still for Bob and still for Ueck. Ueck, I love you, man, and we did it.”
What a class act Yelich is. I’ve been a fan of his since his first days with the Marlins. Just loved the way he played. And then in Jan. 2018, Yelich was traded to Milwaukee for four prospects, none of whom panned out.
Yelich then became the best player in baseball for Milwaukee, winning NL MVP in 2018, runner-up 2019, two batting titles, two years leading baseball in OPS.
But then came the back injuries, a la Don Mattingly, and while he’s had his good moments, like a 103-RBI 2025, he hasn’t really lived up to the monster contract extension he signed.
That said, he got on the field when he could, and he’s a leader, and a good guy. Very happy for him.
And good for the Brewers and their fans.
–The World Series television ratings ended up a lot better than everyone feared. They were downright solid.
Game 1…12.26 million
Game 2…10.85 million
Game 3…8.33 million
Game 4…13.48 million
Game 5…14.22 million
Average…11.83 million
And Game 3, aside from it being a 10-1 blowout, the game over in the 5th inning, was up against Monday Night Football.
–Meanwhile, as we await the lockout, knowing there will be little movement in negotiations through January, at which point the pressure will start to build, fans and President Trump clamoring for serious discussions, the Met’s Bo Bichette had an easy decision.
Bichette, who had a disappointing first season for the Mets, batting .260 with a .702 OPS, though he did have 78 RBIs, exercised his $42 million player option to remain with the Metropolitans. I think I’m like most fans, glad he’s coming back.
Carlos Beltran had a poor first season in New York before then reeling off three terrific campaigns. And going further back, Tommie Agee had a dreadful first year with the Mets after being acquired from the White Sox in 1968, but the next year he was a critical cog in the Mets’ Miracle 1969 season.
I expect Bichette to do the same. And not for nothing, he played in 160 games!
—Mets legend Jerry Koosman died Sunday morning, the news coming just a few hours ago, so I don’t have time to put something together, but the Mets legend, whose #36 is retired by the team, was 83.
Koosman won Games 2 and 5 of the 1969 World Series after the Orioles took Game 1.
Perhaps a bit more on Tuesday in my Add-on (as I have loads on The Kooz in these columns), but consider this for now. Tom Seaver and Koosman were the Mets’ Koufax and Drysdale.
Koosman was actually 4-0 in the World Series, winning two games in both ’69 and 1973.
He was 222-209, 3.36 for his career, including stints with the Twins, White Sox, and Phillies; 140-137, 3.09 with the Mets.
College Football Review
[Comments written prior to release of new AP Poll.]
As it all went down Saturday, No. 9 Kentucky and No. 10 Alabama on their bye week….
No. 1 Miami (8-0) survived a mighty effort by North Carolina (4-4) Saturday night in Chapel Hill. Down 28-24 with 11:46 to play in the fourth, the Hurricanes stormed back for two touchdowns, one the result of Carolina quarterback Billy Edwards Jr.’s only mistake, being stripped of the ball deep in Carolina territory that led to the critical TD, 38-28, and Miami held on, 38-35.
Malachi Toney had two touchdown receptions, Darian Mensah 22/29, 274, 3-0 for the Hurricanes.
But Edwards was terrific, 28/34, 341, 4-0, in his finest effort as a collegian.
Miami now faces Notre Dame next week in a huge contest.
2 Ohio State (6-2) was then upset at USC (7-2) 30-18, as the Buckeyes really missed quarterback Julian Sayin, out of the season. Luke Fahey was just OK, Jeremiah Smith with 10 receptions but for only 83 yards.
The Trojan defense stepped up and coach Lincoln Riley can breathe. He was ready for the postgame, taking out a piece of paper before he walked away from the podium, reading what he had written.
“I wanted to make sure to articulate my thoughts,” he said. “This program is built on internal joy, not external applause. This win is for all the staff members, the players, the leaders, admin,, all the people within the walls.
“I said before this game that I’m the right person for this job, and as long as all those people know that, that’s all I care about. I appreciate being a part of this university and all it does. I appreciate our kids and our staff, and I’m going to continue to fight on because that’s what being a Trojan is all about.”
3 Georgia (7-10 defeated 17 Florida (5-3) 27-8, taking advantage of 3 Gator interceptions, four turnovers in all, the Bulldogs with a fumble return for a touchdown.
4 Indiana (8-1) needed overtime to survive against Minnesota (5-3), 23-16. Paddy McAteer, a kid from Ireland, kicked a 60-yard field goal as time expired to send it to OT. But this was after Minnesota’s Luke Drzewiecki had kicked a 60-yarder of his own at 0.19 left in the game!
IU quarterback Josh Hoover left the game at half with an injury, and backup Grant Wilson did just enough for the win. But the Hoosiers are not exactly playing like defending champs.
5 Notre Dame (7-1) tuned up for its big game against Miami, 35-13 over Navy (2-6). Navy was up 13-7, before the Fighting Irish got rolling.
But the game came at a cost for ND, losing key senior linebacker Drayk Bowen to a probable season-ending ankle injury.
6 Utah (8-0) whipped Cincinnati (5-3) 49-25.
7 UCLA’s dream season continued, now 8-0 after shutting out Nevada (3-5) 27-0, as the Wolf Pack turned it over four times…four interceptions. The Bruin defense has allowed 15 points or fewer in its last five contests.
8 BYU (7-1) beat Arizona State (4-4) 27-20.
In other games of import….
11 Texas (6-2) stayed in the CFP hunt, 31-3 over Mississippi State (4-4), as we had Good Arch, Manning 16/20, 220, 3-0, but he did fumble it away once.
12 Ole Miss (6-2) walloped Auburn (4-4) 45-15.
And in an entertaining affair, one I watched in its entirety, 13 Texas Tech (7-1) won a biggie at home against 22 Arizona (6-2), the Wildcats coming in winning five straight and looking like world beaters.
Arizona led 17-10 at the half as quarterback Noah Fifita playe like a top-ten NFL draft pick, 14/17, 216, 1-0, with some absolutely gorgeous throws, including a 94-yarder for a touchdown to Isaiah Mizell (seven receptions for 182 yards on the day).
But Fifita cooled off and, frankly, looked awful when it mattered down the stretch, overthrowing one receiver after another, including on a critical fourth down, the guy wide open.
For the Red Raiders, Thomas Castellanos got his first start of the season at quarterback and was terrific, rushing for 117 yards and a touchdown, as well as throwing for two TDs, while J’Koby Williams had 175 yards on just 14 carries.
19 SMU (6-2) suffered an awful loss at Syracuse (4-4) 30-27.
The massively disappointing Oregon Ducks hosted 20 Northwestern. Earlier in the week we learned quarterback Dante Moore is likely out for the season, coach Dan Lanning announced. Moore hasn’t played since sustaining a concussion against USC last month on a dirty hit. He’s a surefire top-15 selection in the next NFL draft and no doubt the goal is just get healthy and the NFL already knows what he can do.
Moore would have been a first-round selection last spring, but he opted to return to Oregon to lead them to a national championship. Of course he had the luxury of receiving some hefty NIL money, but you still had to admire the guy.
Anyway, in the game…The Ducks are now 5-3, 34-26 over 20 Northwestern (6-2), as Dylan Railola threw for 336 yards and three touchdowns.
20 Boise State (tied for 20th with Northwestern), held on in a crazy game, 46-45 over Texas State (4-4), a newbie to the Pac-12 conference. The Broncos led 28-3 at the half, and then the Bobcats, stunningly, scored 39 straight points, taking a 39-28 lead with 8:58 to play, only to have four more touchdowns, three by Boise State.
23 Missouri (6-2) beat Arkansas (3-5) 34-10.
24 Oklahoma State (5-3) suffered a bad loss at Iowa State (4-4) 51-49, despite Caleb Hawkins’ incredible game…25 carries for 194 yards and two touchdowns, plus six receptions for 81 and another score for the Cowboys.
25 Wisconsin (5-3) fell at Iowa (6-2) 30-0. Like with SMU falling at Syracuse, this is a hideous loss for the Badgers.
Which leaves me with 14 Wake Forest, which dismantled another opponent, Virginia (4-5), 51-7, the Deacs outgaining the Cavaliers 538-330, Gio Lopez with another terrific game, 229 yards through the air, 64 on the ground, while receiver Carlos Hernandez should be in consideration for AP All-American, eight receptions, 136 yards and a score.
But here’s the thing about Wake (7-1). We’re good! During our five-game winning streak, the last four have been by 51-7, 41-7, 38-14 and 57-3…all ACC opponents. Our only loss was to Miami, 33-20, where we outplayed the Hurricanes in the second half, which set the tone for the rest of the campaign.
After playing Merrimack next week (yikes), we travel to SMU, where we can just about wrap up a berth in the ACC championship game, a rematch against Miami. Pretty remarkable.
But as coach Jake Dickert knows, it’s one game at a time; Dickert’s own stock continuing to soar.
[Lopez hurt his knee, but he’s had knee issues all season and Dickert didn’t seem concerned. That said, the Deacs can easily sit him against Merrimack to heal for SMU. Our backup, Steele Pizzella, is good.]
Finally, Duke is 6-2, 47-2 over Boston College (4-4), the Blue Devils facing the Deacs in the season finale, which could be a rather important game.
Duke’s Nate Sheppard rushed for 97 yards and a school-record five touchdowns, giving him 14 rushing TDs and four receiving, 18 in all, for another school mark.
And Michigan (5-3) beat Rutgers (2-6) in Piscataway, 28-21. Scarlet Knight preseason All-American receiver KJ Duff left early in the game after taking a hit on a pass interference call, having come into it ‘probable.’ Afterwards, coach Greg Schiano said he wasn’t sure Duff would play the rest of the season. That would be a shame.
—And now the new AP Poll!
1 Miami 8-0 (62)
2 Georgia 7-1 (7)
3 Utah 8-0 (1)
4 Notre Dame 7-1
5 UCLA 8-0…highest since 2001!
6 Indiana 8-1
7 BYU 7-1
8 Kentucky 7-1
9 Alabama 6-2
10 Texas 6-2
11 Ohio State 6-2…down 9
12 Ole Miss 6-2

16 Tennessee 6-2
17 Houston 6-2

21 Iowa 6-2
22 New Mexico* 7-1…first ranking in program history….
23 South Carolina 5-3
24 Arizona 6-2
25 Florida 5-3
*New Mexico now in line to grab Group of Six CFP bid if Boise continues to not impress. The Lobos, who have had a program since 1892, are celebrating mightily…it’s amazing to think this is the first time.
The first College Football Playoff ranking comes out Tues., 7:00 PM ET on ESPN. Where will the Deacs be placed?
Next week…1 Miami at 4 Notre Dame; 2 Georgia at 12 Ole Miss; 7 BYU at 3 Utah; 8 Kentucky at 16 Tennessee; 9 Alabama st 15 LSU; 10 Texas at 19 Mizzou.
Yup, a rather delicious lineup, sports fans!
Of course, I’ll be watching Merrimack at Wake Forest, cuz that’s what I do. These seasons don’t come around that often for us.
Conference Standings….

Miami 6-0
Wake Forest 5-1
Louisville 4-2
SMU 4-2

NFL
—The Colts fire sale is on, trading six-time All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson to Seattle for a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick, the Seahawks paying a very modest price to beef up their offensive line. The guy is still just 30 and was All-Pro the last two seasons.
And then the Colts sent two-time All-Pro defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the 49ers, the team that first drafted him. Buckner has had some injury issues the last two seasons, but was off to a terrific start this year. Indy received a 2027 fourth-rounder in return, which is better than the projected compensatory fifth-rounder they would have received if Buckner left in free agency.
So now everyone was waiting to see if star running back Jonathan Taylor would be the next to go.
You know who is excited by Indy’s fire sale? The New York Jets, who hold Indy’s first-round selection!
As in right now, the Jets have the Nos. 6, 8 (Indy’s) and 12 picks in next year’s draft. Some of us fans are saying, just do it…draft TWO quarterbacks in this QB-rich class. One of them would be bound to pan out. Take an offensive lineman with the other selection.
Yes, Jets fans want Indy to lose every game the rest of the way. That ‘8’ could get a lot better.
–The Titans, in a huge (make that stunning) deal, traded All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons to the Bears, netting Tennessee two first-round picks and a fourth-rounder. The 29-year-old is a difference maker and clearly shows the Bears want to contend this year. But the price is steep!
–So today, Sunday….
I watched the Jets hosting the Raiders and it was actually entertaining…New York up 23-14 at the half, as the offense, for once, was firing on all cylinders…the Jets outgaining Vegas 276-97.
But it was a different story in the second half, the Raiders (4-4) ending their 4-game losing streak, 38-33, New York 2-6. It’s always the same thing…the Jets defense crumbles in the key moments, and then we have coaching miscues and bad decision making as well. It is what it is, and it’s my cross to bear as a fan…I have to watch it. I don’t sleep well after. It really blows, boys and girls.
[At least I have “Marshalls” and “Tracker” tonight…my one guilty pleasure the last few years, where I tune out the world, and, yes, Sunday Night Football, for the most part.]
—The Giants were in their bye week. And their division rival the Cowboys were ahead of the Cardinals 30-24, 1:09 to play, but Arizona went 80 yards in eight plays, Gardner Minshew II to Michael Wilson for the tying touchdown with 0:06 remaining, the Cards just needing to make the extra point for the win, and Chad Ryland shanked it! Good gawd. On to OT.
And Ryland got his redemption in OT, a 42-yarder for the win, Dallas owner Jerry Jones with an emphatic ‘S—!’ in his box.
–In a big one, the Ravens at Buffalo, Lamar Jackson returned from injury only to, literally on the first play, hurt his right thumb, he exits, backup Tyler Huntley then leaves in the second quarter with a toe injury, and undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano, out of UConn, enters.
It didn’t go well, Buffalo (6-1) winning 36-10, Baltimore falling to 4-4. We’ll learn the extent of the injuries tomorrow.
–The Lions (5-2) handed the Vikings (6-1) their first loss, 19-15 in Detroit, Jahmyr Gibbs rushing for 153 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries.
—The Bucs (3-5) rushed for a team-record 324 yards in shutting out the Falcons (3-5) 16-0 amid a monsoon in Tampa; Baker Mayfield 0-for-3 passing!
The Bucs were the first team not to complete a single pass since 1974!
–The Steelers are 6-2, 27-6 over the Browns (5-3) in Pittsburgh, Aaron Rodgers doing nothing, but Jaylen Warren rushing for 143 yards and a touchdown in 17 carries.
–The Jags (5-2) beat the Colts (2-6) 42-7. ‘Yippee’, went Jets Nation.
—Ah, the downside of football. This week we had another study, published in JAMA Network Open by researchers at Boston University, Mass General Brigham and the Concussion & CTE Foundation, revealing an estimated 75% of former NFL players who died between 2008 and 2023 had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, the neurodegenerative brain disease tied to high-impact sports such as football, the study released Wednesday.
This marked the first comprehensive effort by scientists to understand the prevalence of CTE among deceased former NFL players. But researchers cautioned that the estimate applies only to deceased NFL players and does not predict the prevalence of CTE in living NFL players.
The study doesn’t address prevalence among college or youth football players. Among the caveats were that the study doesn’t indicate what, if any, symptoms had manifested in the players that might have been related to CTE.
CTE is identified in stages ranging from I to IV based on severity. Symptoms often don’t manifest in the earliest stages, according to researchers.
“Many cases may have been early stage at the time of death and possibly symptom free,” the paper said.
Past research into CTE has drawn criticism for selection bias because of its reliance on brains donated by players who were more likely to have had symptoms while alive.
The NFL, in a statement, said the league “continuously strives to make the game of football safer, including by implementing strategies to reduce concussions and head impacts.”
NBA
–The Timberwolves suffered a big blow as superstar Anthony Edwards is undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee that will sideline him for at least two months. He was averaging 33.3 points through the season’s first four contests.
–I just have to note two games Friday night…the Knicks (2-4) fell to the 76ers (5-1) in Philadelphia, 98-93, as LeBron James had his best game yet for the Sixers, 20 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists.
And Steph Curry led the Warriors (3-3) to a 112 -95 victory over the Lakers (4-2), Curry, who is off to a great start, with 31.
—Ernie Johnson announced that the current season of “Inside the NBA” will be his last hosting in what he said is a decision made entirely on his own.
The 70-year-old Johnson noted a “contributing factor” to his decision, which is that he had dealt with heart issues over the past two years, which included bypass surgery 14 months ago.
Johnson said in a video posted to X: “I feel great. So, this isn’t a case where my doctor said ‘You need to stop working.’ It’s nothing like that, but here’s the deal. Going through that has made me treasure even more every second with my amazing wife of 44 years Cheryl and being Poppi to our five grandchildren.
“So, I just want to slow down a bit and spend more time enjoying that.”
Johnson said he will still be part of March Madness among other projects for TNT and CBS.
Golf Balls
–This week’s Fall Season event on the PGA Tour is the VidantaWorld Mexico Open at Vallarta.
After two rounds….
Andrew Novak -14
Matthieu Pavon and Ben Griffin among a group at -11.
19-year-old Blades Brown -9.
After 54 holes….
Novak has a six-shot lead over Pavon.
Novak -23…67-61-62
Pavon -17
Novak is looking for his second PGA Tour win, while Pavon with a solo second could move from 140 on the FedEx Cup points list to 94 and take a massive step in securing his card for 2027.
Blades Brown was T9 at -13.
As I go to post, Novak is up four with five holes to go, but Pavon has crumbled (relative to the field), and now sits at 125 in the Cup standings.
Premier League
Forget relegation, Tottenham fans. The Spurs won their third straight on Saturday, 2-0 over Crystal Palace, which played a man down from the 13’ mark on after a red card. Tottenham is now 8th in the Table.
Brighton handed Manchester City a second straight loss, 1-0. Chelsea defeated Manchester United, 2-0.
Sunday, in the lone contest, Liverpool hosted Arsenal in a biggie…and the Gunners prevailed, 1-0, to take back first from City.
Table…9 of 38 played….
1 Arsenal 24 points
2 Man City 21
3 Brighton 19
4 Chelsea 16
—In one of the great upsets in the history of English Football, in a fourth-round Carabao Cup game, Arsenal lost to Fleetwood Town on penalties after a 1-1 draw; Fleetwood a side ranked 84 places below them, currently 19th place in fourth-tier League Two*.
*I’ve used a baseball analogy before, and it’s an apt one. Premier League is the Major Leagues, Championship League (where PL teams are relegated to, and CL teams earn their promotions to PL) is AAA, League One is AA, and League Two is single-A. So, picture the scope of this mammoth upset.
Stuff
–They held the Breeders’ Cup this weekend at Keeneland Race Course, and in Friday’s Juvenile, the biggie for 2-year-olds and perhaps a preview of next spring’s Kentucky Derby, ‘Hughes’ was the winner. Trained by Bob Baffert, racing fans have known Hughes is a comer, now 5-for-5.
Off to Santa Anita, Baffert said after, and the preparations for the 3-year-old campaign.
And then Saturday was the biggie, the Breeders’ Cup Classic, where 5-year-old, Japanese bred, Forever Young, the defending champ, is looking to cement his legacy as perhaps the greatest thoroughbred ever.
You also had Golden Tempo, who won the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. And 4-year-old Sovereignty, who won 2025’s Derby and Belmont Stakes; both opting out of the Preakness.
Knightsbridge would be the fourth favorite, coming into the race ‘hot.’
As in this was a stacked field. Very exciting.
And it was Sovereignty…1 ¾ lengths over Pennsylvania Derby winner The Puma, stablemate Knightsbridge in third.
Forever Young was 5th, Golden Tempo 6th. As the commentators said after, it seems as if Forever Young had one trip too many, going back and forth between Asia and the U.S.
Sovereignty and Knightsbridge are retiring to their breeder Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid at Godolphin farm in Kentucky.
—Andreas Almgren of Sweden won the New York City Marathon today in 2 hours 6 minutes 1 second, after breaking away in the final mile. Yemaneberhamn Crippa of Italy, who like Almgren is better known for shorter distance races, finished second.
The women’s race came down to a late sprint, with Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya pulled away from two pursuers in a late dash to win in 2:24:36. Chepkirui, who won in 2024, fended off a challenge from last year’s winner, Hellen Obiri, also of Kenya, and Jessica McClain of the United States, who made a last-minute break for second place. Loved seeing McClain take the silver.
Talk about outstanding weather for a marathon…temps in the upper 40s to low 50s, no wind. Crowds appeared to be even larger than normal, owing to the weather.
–We note the passing of actor Patrick Stewart, 86. Stewart overcame a bleak childhood in England’s coal-mining country to find acclaim as a Shakespearean actor before making an unlikely career pivot in middle age that would bring him his greatest fame, playing a noble starship captain on the TV series “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”
Stewart in his late 40s had become an eloquent, statesmanlike presence on the British stage when he was a new face to American television viewers, making his debut in 1987 as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard in “The Next Generation,” the first live-action spinoff of the original “Star Trek” series of the late 1960s.
Stewart went on to star in four feature-film spinoffs.
I have to admit, while I loved the original 1960s Star Trek as a kid, I never got into all the iterations that followed. I never went to a Star Trek movie, for example. This doesn’t make me a bad person.
Top 3 songs for the week 10/30/76: #1 “If You Leave Me Now” (Chicago) #2 “Disco Duck (Part 1)” (Rick Dees & His Cast of Idiots) #3 “Rock’n Me” (Steve Miller)…and…#4 “The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald” (Gordon Lightfoot) #5 “A Fifth Of Beethoven” (Walter Murphy & The Big Apple Band…godawful…) #6 “Love So Right” (Bee Gees) #7 “She’s Gone” (Daryl Hall & John Oates) #8 “Play That Funky Music” (Wild Cherry) #9 “Muskrat Love” (Captain & Tennille) #10 “Magic Man” (Heart…B- week…#s 2 and 5 drive the week lower…)
